He will never sign a midfielder whos only job is to be a cleaner, that is not enough at Manchester United. Depends on the formation and the other players at disposal. Im just not sure they want that little extra defensive grit if it means 0 goals/0 assists from that position every season. To be honest, apart from Scholes, and maybe the injured Fletcher, I don't think they have a particularly gifted central midfielder there at all. You make a fair point, I guess what I was trying to say is that he offers little else - in modern fotball there is more to a defensive midfielder than breaking up play, in the same way there is more to a striker than only scoring goals. I suppose it's down to whether you want two box-to-box midfielders, or a specialist break up merchant to allow the attacking players to play with freedom. I actually think Tiote is useful going forward, but not in terms of creating or scoring the goal. His complete drive and determination allows him to turn defence into attack very quickly. In Europe I can see the need more clearly. I do think most teams would take him, mid-table clubs would probably sell their sister to get him - but will the top clubs splash 20 mill for a break-up merchant? rogerbarton 24 Posted April 3, 2012 Share Posted April 3, 2012 Arsenal are a good example, because they play in a similar way as to how we've set up in the last couple of games - a midfield destroyer would work well in behind two creative types. That said, Song's actually a great all round player in my opinion. I'm just not sure I'd buy into the idea that, say, a Tiote - Sneijder central midfield pairing wouldn't work well. Lake Bells tits 1 Posted April 3, 2012 Share Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) Yep, but then again, in the 2010/2011 season Alex Song had 5 goals and 3 assists, and this season he has 2 goals and 13 assists, so he does contribute a bit offensively as well, and thats just going off raw statistics. If we've only got a 1 goal margin, he's barely going to venture past halfway. I'm sure he'll chip in with a few more if we continue with a Ba - Cisse - Ben Arfa front trio. Dr Gloom 19826 Posted April 3, 2012 Share Posted April 3, 2012 i personally think tiote is the classic modern defensive midfielder. he's not just a ball winner in the david batty/nicky butt mould. he can beat a man and pick a pass, while having the discipline and athleticism to excel in the position. i reckon he's up there alongside vieria, keane and makalele as the premiership's best defensive midfielders. he's our most important player after colo right now.
