All I can say is, I'm a big fan of inheritance tax, probably the most fair tax of all

So my parents work all their lives saving money that they pay 20-40% tax on. Then they leave some to me and the government taxes it again?

Proper fair that like

The tax is on you not them.

Inheritance is fair enough but then cut the shit about this being a meritocracy.

Well they tax anything your parents leave over £325k. It essentially money you're getting that you haven't earned.

I'm assuming that NJS supports higher IHT because inheritance keeps the rich kids rich.

I support 100% with no threshold. I'd also make all planning to avoid it a crime

People looking after their kids is one thing - multi-generation inherited privilige is by far the worst thing about this country imo.

So nobody can leave anything to anyone?

Are you a member of the RCGB?

What about it? So the money my parents got taxed on, that I then get taxed on, gets taxed again by Vat whenever I buy something? Is that meant to be a good thing?

I just meant its not a unique concept.

One point of taxation does sort of appeal to me in principle but it would have to be a lot higher to generate the same income.

Of course if you want to seriously reduce the size of government to lessen the required income then fair enough but that would certainly mean no NHS which would affect you and your parents directly.

Very interesting budget coming along in 3 weeks. Half the party wanting more austerity and half wanting less.

Having fucked up the estimate on the 4G auction by over a billion and counting on the over-estimate in his last budget, he's got a big hole to plug.

Only right that the poor and indegent pay the price for that.

Agreed, a true meritocracy requires a fair amount of redistribution from top to bottom so that everyone has a fair acces to basic civic rights and equal opportunities. Inheritance tax does this pretty well, it takes from those who have done very little to deserve a lump sum of money and if implemented correctly redistributes it to the less well off through something like a child trust fund.

that depends whether you like having roads to drive on, a free healthcare service, a safety net if you lose your job and an overall more cohesive society.
