plus they'll have the option to ask for the extra half an hour if we're near to finishing them off by the close

I think it's irrelevant because they can only play until 7 which is what they can do anyway light permitting because of the lost overs yesterday. Don't quote me on that like ;)

from the beeb

To put you in the picture, there are 33 overs left in the day, which have to be bowled by 19:00. After that, if England think they can get the match won tonight, they can request an extra half an hour. The last two-day Test match in England was the win over West Indies at Headingley in 2000. The 15-year-old me was lucky enough to be in the crowd. Edgbaston roars Stokes to the crease, Peter Nevill works hard to keep him out.

From the Guardian, is this you Gloom?

“Hi Niall, as someone who has tickets for tomorrow, I am despairing at the current state of play.” moans Luke Stevenson. “Obviously, it’s great for England, however my dad just texted me asking if I fancy a day at the Black Country museum instead.”

There's a small part of me that is willing the Aussies on to make a game of it. A small total to chase down in a session or so would make the trip worthwhile

Game over lads. Brilliant match for England. Australia just have to hope they can bounce back because they've got no hope here.

I assume Michael Clarke will get slaughtered over this in the Aussie media. He's been in their sights for a while now.

Yeah. The vultures will be circling for sure. His captaincy is good which will save him for a time to some extent, but he needs some runs.

Personally I think his back is still worrying him. It may not be that he's physically hampered by it at the moment but I think there's a fear of hurting it again which is harming his performance.

He doesn't move well. He doesn't play the square of the wicket shots with any conviction which has typically been his strength. In the words of one of my kid's idols, he needs to 'let it go, let it go, don't hold your back anymore'.

The miserable weather over there must have an effect. The miserable bastards that live there full-time are testament to that. ;)

Seriously though Kitters, I think you're absolutely right. The calls for retirement are just going to get louder, the longer he goes without a big score. The situation in which he failed to make runs in this match are important too. The side needed him and he failed. That alone will put pay to a lot of the sympathetic voices amongst the crowd howling him down.

Personally, I'm not sure what he should do. I truly think his injury is chronic and that he knows it. That must weigh heavily on his mind each time he goes out to bat. It certainly is effecting his performance in my opinion. Come what may in this series, I think he deserves a chance to prove he can still perform to his previous levels. He deserves at least that much in my opinion.

There isn't much chance of Smith taking over and Clarke moving back down the order, where is average is better, as a specialist batter either, is there? Aussie skippers don't have much history of going back into the ranks after the top job as they do elsewhere, they were pointing out on the verdict yesterday.

I'm on my way to Brum now. Genuinely hope the Aussies make a bit of game of it so there's at least a spectacle of sorts, and we get a session at least before the presentations, though not too much of a spectacle obviously. If the tail wags and they get up to 150, you never know. Stranger things have happened!

The Anderson injury looks like being a terrible blow not just for England but for the series. Losing your main striker bowler with the next test match at his favourite ground where he averages 7 wickets a test at under 20 runs a piece. Could be as significant as the Aussies losing McGrath for two tests in 05

Yeah. I can't think of a Test captain who has lost the job but stayed in the side to be honest. I don't think the captaincy is effecting his performance in any regard, it's everything else, so it wouldn't help in my opinion.
