TheGingerQuiff 2412
Apparently that Soumare was offered £50k pw. For a £40m signing it's like they didn't really want to sign him
Kid Dynamite 8023
Summer 1997 has to go down as one of our worst transfer windows in history mind https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/transfers/verein/762/plus/0?saison_id=1997&pos=&detailpos=&w_s=s Sold Ginola, Ferdinand, Beardsley and Elliott. Alex 38006
Speed was a deadline signing later in the season anyway wasn’t he? And while he later turned out to be a great signing, Dalglish played him in the left side of midfield (of course he did). The daft thing is at the end of the previous season Dalglish had stumbled upon a system that worked with Tino, Shearer and Sir Les all playing in a 4-3-3. So he scrapped it (of course he did).

Monkeys Fist 46672
And John Barnes- I was 29 in 1997 and was middle aged by the time he’d ran past the halfway line.

essembeeofsunderland 811
If anyone on here has an ounce of sympathy for Big Joe because he’s been moved from his natural position of playing on the left to centre forward, think back to the decent job Barnes did when he was also moved from wide left to centre forward . Watched it in some bar in town I seem to remember. I think it was our third from last game. If we’d won, then beat Man Utd away (we ended up drawing 1-1 or 0-0 there too I think) we only have needed to beat Forest to win the league. NJS 4737
I had a slightly unpopular view on that game - the football was fantastic but I reckon scoring "only" 3 goals out of 30 attempts was a shocking indictment of the strike force
