Seaton Burn the frontrunner for the new training ground. Just along the road from yours truly. I'll probably be granted press access.

Easy question at the end of that article.

This week’s puzzler… Nick Woltemade became only the second Newcastle player with a surname beginning in ‘W’ to score for the club in Europe.

Can you name the other player and the match in which they did so?

The article SPECIFICALLY talks about how this is designed to do the opposite, and speed things up.

I’d love to be positive but with our track record, Suds will be analysing data for some other cunt in 6 month anyway

Not big fans of the "all I need to know is what my eyes are telling me" approach to football.

So we weren't doing any of this before err, "Suds" turned up then?

I'd rather blow smoke up their arse when we can see the fruits of their infatuation, personally.

We've been data driven for a while now - Ashworth was the one who engaged the lad I've mentioned on here previously to build all of the dashboards and stuff for each player - it's actually Bruce Rioch's son. I worked with him for a bit in my last job cos we got him in to do some data stuff there too. Prior to him getting involved we had fuck all and we're miles behind most other PL clubs.

But having the data is one thing, having the people that can properly analyse and use it to make decisions is another. We've obviously had analysts etc at the club, but by the sound of it this lad and the team he's building are a big step up.

Let's hope so.

To be clear, I was taking the piss out of Toonpack posting an article which directly criticised his "all I need are the eyes in my head" approach to football analysis.

The fruits of their infatuation are there to see at clubs like Brighton though. It's not like this stuff is unproven. We just need our own version, and that's what we're building.

Quote

One innovation around data has seen him develop an algorithm that assesses performances relative to the strength of the league they are playing in.

Using data and artificial intelligence, he developed a “tax rate” for leagues all over the world, which is then used in a mathematical equation that works out whether their performances are impressive enough to warrant a conversation about them becoming a transfer target.

It goes like this: player A scores 20 goals in the Belgian league and has physical data that stands out. The equation developed by Gopaladesikan multiplies those numbers by the league’s “tax rate” adjusted by the team’s relative strength in the league. If the numbers still stand out, it feels like a green flag for the scouting team.

Wow, so you’re telling me that 20 goals in the Premier League is better than 20 goals in the Azerbaijani second division? This is some revolutionary shit.

What were we doing before? Running our models through an air fryer?

Bruce Rioch used to be on my bedroom wall along with two ex NUFC managers 😊

His son's called Bruce Rioch as well.

He's a nice bloke actually. Although for fucking ages he promised he'd get us tickets for a Newcastle match (he was still working for the club at the time) and in the end he served up a night of corporate hospitality at Boro.

Complete with a Bernie Slaven after match speech and Q&A where he basically talked about how shit their keeper was.

I know you were taking the piss, I'm just saying that because someone or something works out somewhere else *for a spell* doesn't mean it will elsewhere or the method will stay relevant, see tactics in football, I really like Nuno, think he's one of the better managers for not being a cunt but for me Forest got found out last season, they were nearly relegated, came good then carried it forward for over half a season, They're now reverting to type albeit with a few good player in the side. I hope Suds is superb and gives an edge, we've already been doing pretty well with signings before he came in so if he can somehow raise that level I'm sure he'll be worth every penny, maybe it's just me but I don't like crucifying or lauding new people at the club, (Ashley era apart!) until we see their results and working.

Which is indeed all you do need to analyse an individual game that you have watched, comparing data from multiple games, and players over same, is a whole different ball game hopalong.

As wrong in your assertion as you are confident.
