Looking at the aerial photo and where Leazes terrace starts, would it not be possible to demolish 25/30/40% of the East stand and build the Gallowgate to L7 round to that point where the Terrace starts?

I realise light space  might knacker it but maybe an idea to get a bit more in to the works.

Yeah it's the reduction in natural light that causes the issues with getting planning permission. I also suspect the Georgian houses in St James' St are under some sort of listing too.

I'm assuming Strawberry Place will remain a public highway so whatever we do will have to traverse that. But demolishing everything south of the leading edge of the Gallowgate roof and building a Dortmund/Spurs style kop end must be a consideration. Creating the fan zone in the area south of the Metro station provides a perfect new location for the statues and memorials too. The SBR memorial garden will no doubt be a good spot.

I have suggested that (without the Jeddah part) in the past - I'd love to know if any other listed fascias/buildings have been moved.

If you moved the whole block back all you would lose is a dodgy part of Leazes Park and a couple of tennis courts. Whilst we're in blue sky thinking mode, I've sometimes wondered if Leazes Terrace could be incorporated as part a megastand somehow.

Thing is about Leazes Terrace, it is a beutiful Georgian building which asolutely needs to be preserved. But I've been in a couple of flats there, and they are dark and pokey. It's quite frustrating they are where they are. Obviously as well, extedning the long side of the pitch would be preferable to the ends.

Leazes Terrace is Grade 1 listed and Pevsner described it as, iirc, one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the country. Even Leazes Park is Grade 2 listed so there’s limitations on changing that too. I think any solution would have to leave it completely alone

Aye the only grounds for relocating a Grade 1 building would be if the building was at risk due to natural causes - subsidence, etc.

I doubt allowing the expansion of a modern sports stadium would be considered adequate grounds for relocation by English heritage.

If you pedestrianised Strawberry Place at certain times, couldn't you have the best of both worlds?

Also, I'm curious, how does the Metro Station impact construction works?

Fair enough. Then we need to look at options to rotate the pitch again maybe?

Funnily enough I was just having a look at the location of the metro lines and they do run close to Strawberry Place. There was a suggestion years ago that as it was a terminal station, the lines could be relocated to terminate pretty much where St James' Boulevard meets Gallowgate - but it wasn't favourable as there was a desire to future extend the line towards the General Hospital which is no longer a requirement.

Let's face it, the owners have a fuckload of money so surely a complete reconfiguation of the Metro Station as part of any development plans basically moving it south of its current location cannot be out of the question?

What the fucks a fanzone? Isn’t that what the Trent is for.

I would think in this context it would be bars / food stuff that’s behind / underneath any new stand. As opposed to an alternative to match going with live streams or that sort of thing. If it’s done well then that’s a good thing for people wanting a pie/piss/pint at half time and would be better than what we have. Like you, I’d rather just go to one of the many places on walking distance before or after the match

I would think, before stumping up the cash to buy it back they've assessed what is possible and that no showstoppers are evident re Metro etc.

Council will wave through any planning permissions they need (any that don't impact the listed buildings obvs.)

Hell, even Stockport County have a 'Fanzone' behind one of their stands. There's stuff for kids to do, a food outlet and a bar. It's not much, but when we went with two 3yr olds it was perfect to occupy them while the two grown ups got a pint down our throats. I'd imagine a proper Premier League standard Fan Zone would be great for families and tourists and the like.

Bit of club history, small club shop, food outlets, bars, coffeeshop, some football-based activities for kids.

Plus if they knock the existing Gallowgate down and start again there's infrastructure that'll need relocating - club shop, Shearers, ticket office, statues, etc. They may even consider creating a function venue - meeting legend ex-players etc.

Multiple times the owners have talked about wanting to better integrate the club with its fan base. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it'd be an alternative.

That's a big old plot of land, isn't it?

Could be part of the reason they only sold 1000 STs this season so no ST holders will be locked out if the gallowgate was part or fully demolished. Could be a temporary ban or reduction on away fans as ST holders are relocated? No members or general public would get to games but would obviously have a better chance once a rebuild was completed.

exactly. wasn't shepherd on about building hotels and casinos on it. i wonder if some of the problems with the east stand could be addressed if they demolished the corners and built a fuck off massive gallowgate end. you could even move the pitch slightly south to accommodate it. once we have a 30k capacity gallowgate,. you could demolish the east stand and just build a small, modern stand in its place.

The land has been completely cleared so I think they have. It's a large enough but over two levels with a geet big Metro Station in the way.

As the smallest capacity stand, and the one with restrictions on any future increase in size, it would probably make sense to convert the East stand in to an all-standing section.
You would increase capacity, give the whole east side an injection of atmosphere, and create superb fan-division with the old cunts sat there whinging like bitches about being moved.

I see nothing but wins all round.

love that idea

i think they'll have to stick some corporate seats in the east stand too - you get a great view there - and you surely can't put them in any gallowgate redevelopment.

a new row of prawn sandwhich boxes with the standing section below would be hilarious
