Aye I think it's a good signing. We're probably looking at £20m to make it permanent next season, but we'll know by then how he looks playing for us.

Arsenal did a job on Southhampton selling him for £25m when he couldn't get a game for them. I would hope our option to buy is sub £20m as he didn't increase his value at Southhampton and through the ever forward marching passage of time is now four years older than when Arsenal signed him for £25m ish.

£25m release clause supposedly. Presumably we can net our loan fee off that but still £21m if that release clause thing is true.

I'm sure I read yesterday the fee would be £25m

EDIT: Gemmill beat me to it.

At least we'll be informed when we make the decision. Despite him moving around a lot for a supposed top keeper he does have a sense of loyalty and effort in the way he plays so he should have passed the Howe attitude test. Worth a try. There's no guarantee that Trafford develops to be a top GK so (searching for silver linings) this could be a better (and cheaper) option for us.

I'm fairly certain Trafford will develop into the next England first choice goalkeeper. We've missed out on him big time, but it is what it is and we need to move on from it.

Probably the biggest fuck up in goalkeeping terms since we refused to pay £700k to Brondby for some fella called Schmeichel in 1987 only to burn an extra £150k 18 months later on some bloke called Beasant.

He has that presence about him but plenty of keepers do and then stumble at some point. Ironically Pickford has had the greatest longevity in the England side. Henderson was supposed to be the next big thing but never kicked on.

It'd be great if a fresh start meant that Ramsdale no longer makes errors, but can't see it. You don't get moved on as readily as he has been if your team has full confidence in you ability. That said it should be a vastly different proposition playing for us versus Southhampton.

City always had the last say. If we agreed a fee earlier there's every chance City would have done the same thing anyway. They were happy with him playing consistently for Burnley in order to develop knowing that they could snap their fingers and bring him back at any time. Smart contract for them. We just happened to be the hopeful saps that triggered them activating their clause.

On the contrary, I think the fact he continues to be recognised as a decent keeper having played in front of some frankly shocking defences is a testament to him.

Ha. Funny you should say that...this is from a local goalkeeping coach. "between the sticks" is specialised goal keeping coaching for all ages from various ex pro/semi pro keepers

This lad told me that he thought that Pope was unorthodox but makes his style work despite not doing what most keepers do ...seems he rates Ramsdale highly...

Hopefully they settle for less though.

If he realises his potential even £21 mill could be a snip.

Can't we sell the Greek lad to Saudi for 20M or so since there's already a 'fair value' established given what we paid for him.

Everyone but us seems to be able to pull off these deals. Liverpool just sold some guy you'd never heard of for 15M odd to Lyon. More than established premier league Longstaff.

Apparently he's off on loan to a Spanish club on loan. Anything permanent deal for less than £20m would go down as a significant PSR loss.
