The Sun. Newcastle sack footie yob Barton SOCCER yob Joey Barton dodged a second jail term for thuggery yesterday – as Newcastle United finally gave him the boot. The brute – currently serving six months for beating up two strangers – escaped with a suspended sentence for punching a former teammate senseless. Berserk Barton, 25, who at the time was a Man City player, kept raining blows on Ousmane Dabo, 31, as he lay UNCONSCIOUS on the training pitch, a court heard. But because Barton pleaded guilty to ABH a judge promised to spare him further jail when he is formally sentenced today. It means the lout will go free in days – with a tag. Barton, who was capped once by England gave a defiant thumbs-up to relatives as he was led away at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. Decked But last night’s sacking by Newcastle – following calls by The Sun to ban him from football – means the £5.8million midfielder’s career IS effectively over. Barton – serving six months for drunkenly attacking a man and a boy of 16 outside a Liverpool McDonald’s – became eligible for early release on Sunday. A condition of release is likely to be that he attends a booze clinic. Barton, who has a shameful history of violence, decked Frenchman Dabo after branding him “s***”. The ferocity of the attack stunned the team, the judge heard. Greece striker Georgios Samaras, 23, told cops he was so shocked by the violence he “could never forget it”. Meanwhile, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and his board have decided there is no way they will tolerate £45,000-a-week Barton remaining at the club. Barton, from Huyton, Merseyside, was bought by former Toon boss Sam Allardyce from Man City. But it was agreed by the board as part of his signing that Barton’s contract would be terminated if he was convicted of assaulting Dabo.

The Sun: ARSENAL are ready to make a move for Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins — if Emmanuel Adebayor is sold. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has long admired Martins, 23, but will not pay the £15million the Toon want. Even if Adebayor is sold for £30m to Barcelona or AC Milan, Wenger will not change his £11m valuation of Martins. The Nigerian’s contract has a £13m release clause and that can be triggered if he asks for a transfer. Newcastle have told Martins’ advisors he can go for the right price and Arsenal have let it be known they are interested. Martins agreed a new £80,000-a-week contract on Tyneside but the club did not complete the paperwork and the offer has been withdrawn. A Martins source said: “It is a shock Newcastle cannot find the money any more for his new deal but he is a player a lot of clubs want.” Adebayor’s future is still in doubt. He said he was staying at Arsenal then insisted the club should accept a good offer for him. At the weekend he said he wanted the £120,000-a-week Thierry Henry was paid.

Transfer funds blow for Keegan Jun 28 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United have suffered a summer transfer blow today after it emerged that West Bromwich Albion had cooled their interest in Shola Ameobi. It means that Kevin Keegan could be denied an extra £3m to bolster his summer transfer kitty. The striker was hoping former Middlesbrough captain Tony Mowbray was ready to offer him a chance to stay in the Premier League, with the Toon Academy product desperate to continue plying his trade in the top flight. Yet it appears West Brom are indecisive about the Ameobi situation. A source close to the Baggies board told the Chronicle: “There was initial interest over Ameobi, but his name hasn’t been mentioned for a while now. “The board know that you can’t live beyond your means when it comes to Premier League wages. “And they are going to look at all of the options before making a decision on who they bring in this time around.” Ameobi was loaned out to Stoke City just weeks after Kevin Keegan returned to the club, but the move didn’t work out despite the Potters winning promotion. A hamstring injury meant his loan stint only resulted in the Nigerian-born Ameobi playing a bit-part as they clinched promotion last May. Hull City are another club that had been linked with Ameobi, but manager Phil Brown is yet to get back behind his desk after the Tigers’ extended campaign last term. And, like West Brom, they will be cautious about splashing out too much on wages in their first ever Premier League campaign. The Chronicle revealed on May 21 that Toronto FC boss John Carver wanted to sign Ameobi and, despite the player’s agent Steven Denos ruling out a move to the MLS, the word from across the Atlantic is that the Canadian club are keeping tabs on the recently-married player’s situation. And talk that Toronto couldn’t afford Shola’s wages has been dismissed by the club. Mega-bucks Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment group are ready to back a move for the player. And TFC could exercise their designated player card, which allows teams to have one player earning more than the MLS’s salary cap of $400,000.

Last Updated: Thursday, 19 April 2007, 12:07 GMT 13:07 UK Baptista cannot settle at Arsenal Julio Baptista's future at Arsenal is in doubt after he revealed he is struggling to adjust to playing in the Premiership and life in England. The 26-year-old is on a season-long loan from Real Madrid as part of a swap deal for Jose Antonio Reyes. Baptista told The Times: "The weather over here is killing me. We get one day of sunshine for every 30 days of rain. "The Premiership is very hard. I enjoy making clever touches but the game is so fast I don't have time to think." There is still a possibility of Baptista's switch being made permanent but the Brazilian indicated he would rather return to the Bernabeu at the end of the season. "I could stay at Arsenal but right now I can't see myself anywhere for definite," he explained. "But it is clear in my mind that I'd tackle a second chance with Real with far more maturity than I did my first. "My girlfriend and my mother are frightened about not seeing the sun in England. They miss being in Madrid." Baptista, known as 'The Beast', has not been impressed by some of Arsenal's rivals. "The teams from the north of England are terrible," Baptista said. "When we play them I have counted their centre-backs booting up to 30 long balls upfield per game. "The moment you stop to think, someone has taken the ball off you and knocked you to the ground. "Over here they value a corner kick more than a fancy flick. I am lucky to be with Arsenal, as they are a team that likes to play proper football."
