16min - And Carroll goes close again just moments later, this time it's Dyer who tees up the young striker but his side-footed effort from 12 yards out is saved by Lee-Barrett. 15min - Andy Carroll has a glorious chance to open the scoring when Dyer springs Carr free on the right, his delicate chip finds the 18-year-old striker unmarked at the far post and he heads back across goal aiming for the far corner, keeper Lee-Barrett denies Carroll his goal with a fisted clearance from the goal-line and Martins is unable to return the loose ball goalwards and Pools clear. 12min - Dyer breaks free in the area after out-foxing full-back Robson with a clever stepover and quick turn, his pull-back for Carroll doesn't have enough on it and Liddle manages to scramble the ball clear from inside the six-yard box. 10min - Martins cushions a header down for strike partner Andy Carroll and immediately sets off looking for the return pass, Carroll holds onto the ball a fraction too long before releasing the Nigerian and he is flagged offside. 7min - McCunnie forces a corner off the back-tracking Charles N'Zogbia and Humphrey's delivery is headed behind by Big Andy Carroll. The second flag-kick causes confusion inside United's area but it's Huntington who eventually hacks clear. 6min - Dyer and Barton combine in the right but the new midfielder's cross lacks direction and Lee-Barrett claims easily at the far post. 4min - Oba Martins' loose pass is seized upon by Antony Sweeney midway inside his own half and he charges 40 yards with the ball before letting fly towards Shay Given's goal, it's never troubling the Unted skipper and he plucks the ball from the air in what was the game's first effort on target. Pools get the game underway with the Magpies defending the goal in front of the stand where the strong away following is housed. TEAM NEWS JOEY Barton and David Rozehnal are both handed Newcastle United debuts as Sam Allardyce names his first starting eleven as Magpies manager. Czech international Rozehnal partners Peter Ramage at the heart of United's defence, while £5.8m signing Barton lines up alongside Nicky Butt in the centre of midfield. Shay Given will lead the Geordies out after celebrating ten years at the club this week. Teenage striker Andy Carroll is paired with last season's top scorer Oba Martins in attack, with Kieron Dyer and Charles N'Zogbia on the flanks. Completing the line-up are full-backs Stephen Carr and Paul Huntington. SAM Allardyce has reiterated his determination to bring top quality defenders to St.James' Park before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August. The United boss has already added Czech international David Rozehnal to the Newcastle backline, but admits he still wants to see at least three more defenders arrive at St.James' Park this summer. But Allardyce says that he is not targeting the "galacticos" who have been linked with a move to Tyneside in recent days. "Myself and the new owners are all hoping we can move in the transfer market and bring some good players to the football club. "I am not talking about the 'galactico' stars that are being mentioned - that is just a nonsense at the moment. "We need three or four solid, very, very good defenders from wherever it may be, and we will be a force this year. "But we need to get them first. If he wants to give me a little gift after with a galactico, I won't say no." And Allardyce has dismissed speculation linking the Geordies with left-back pairing Gabriel Heinze and Franck Quedrue, adding: "I wouldn't say we have any interest in Franck Queudrue. "Heinze - if I wanted him, I don't think he would come. "Certainly, if he got away from Manchester United, I'm not so sure that it wouldn't be another club somewhere else in Europe rather than in this country. "It would be nice if he did want to come and we could pursue it, but I don't think we can." And the former Bolton boss also said that a summer move for Barcelona's Edmilson was not an option given the player's recent knee operation which could see him sidelined until November. "Edmilson is obviously not for now because the injury is a concern," he added. "We may have to wait until January and it's a great shame for a player of his ability and talent. "But saying that I think we would've faced competition from the likes of AC Milan and Inter, although there still might be the opportunity to sign him.

Horatio always looks like he's smelling his own farts. He does, I can't stand CSI: Miami for that very reason, CSI: Vegas is best.

Dyer 1 goals. Emre 45 missed free kicks. Even more realistic.

I practically have to get into character when I go to work, I'm patient, attentive, amiable, unflappable, basically the complete opposite of me when I'm at home.

If Zoggy thinks life would be better at Fulham or Bolton then let him go, he's clearly clinically insane.

I had to pick my moment carefully, clean sheets on that morning, otherwise it would have looked like the Snail version of the London Marathon had taken place.

He must surely have some idea or at least advisors who would tell him its just not going to happen. You would certainly like to think so, but this was probably a very tentative enquiry rather than an offer of any description. If I can find her number I am gonna give Cheryl Tweedy a call and see if she fancies an affair if I promise not to tell Ashley, about as much chance Exactly, there is a major difference between a tentative enquiry and a full offer.

I don't understand why its automatically a load of bollocks, Ashley is new to football and wants a top name, I don't find it so unbelievable that the name he's come up with is Ronaldinho's.

Was Shearer such a great captain ? It always struck me that his were the first shoulders to drop when goings got tough.

Thats what I thought too !

Taylor in line to be skip Jul 15 2007 by Neil Farrington, Sunday Sun STEVEN TAYLOR is the shock leading candidate for the vacant Newcastle captaincy — and the chance to become the youngest United skipper of all time. Magpies boss Sam Allardyce is ready to hand the armband to 21-year-old Taylor ahead of more senior candidates to succeed the departed Scott Parker. Shay Given, Nicky Butt and Nobby Solano are also in the frame, but Allardyce believes Taylor may benefit most from the added responsibility of leadership. Taylor is fighting to be fit for the start of the season on August 12, but that is not thought to have affected Allardyce’s thinking on the captaincy issue. Given — Parker’s deputy last season — was thought to be favourite for promotion, but there remain doubts within St James’s Park over the wisdom of having a goalkeeping captain. Newcastle’s hierarchy are delighted at the prospect of a return to the days of a Geordie skipper, with Taylor set to follow in the footsteps of Alan Shearer. If he does get the nod, Taylor will replace Jermaine Jenas as Newcastle’s youngest skipper. Jenas was 21 years and nine months when he led United out against Crystal Palace in November 2004 while Shearer was injured. Taylor would better Jenas’s mark by two months. Meanwhile, Newcastle sources have played down talk that Allardyce is set to sign Nice right-back Rod Fanni.
