  17. Monaco have won the race to sign St Etienne's in-demand forward Frederic Piquionne. The forward has been targeted by a clutch of sides around Europe this month, as the likes of Lyon, Paris Saint Germain, West Ham, Tottenham and Real Betis have all held more than a passing interest in the striker. Newcastle attempted to thrash out a loan deal at the start of the week, but they have all been beaten to the punch by Monaco. The Principality side have agreed a loan deal with Les Verts until the end of the season and have also secured an option to push through a permanent transfer in the summer. Piquionne will be paraded before the media on Thursday morning, but his first impression of the club is positive. "I am very happy to have signed," he noted. "There was much stress in these last hours but I have a great desire to achieve great things here."
  18. I'm not a coward, Roeder MARTIN O’NEILL has told Glenn Roeder to get his facts right after being labelled a coward by the Newcastle boss. Aston Villa manager O’Neill was accused of not having the bottle to take over at Tyneside last year. Caretaker Roeder was finally installed as the long-term successor to Graeme Souness despite suggestions the job was O’Neill’s if he wanted it. And that sparked an extraordinary suggestion that the Irishman was too frightened to step into the Toon hot-seat. Roeder taunted O’Neill: “If a person doesn't want this job, then I think you have to question his courage.” O’Neill, choosing his words carefully, admitted: “What Glenn said has been brought to my attention. Whatever was said was full of great imagination and not much fact behind it. “What happened is not important now and it is certainly not relevant. I have a job at Aston Villa and it’s one I want to do.” O’Neill was heavily courted by several clubs, not to mention England, during 2006 after taking time out to look after his ill wife. And it was his personal circumstances which made it impossible to encourage the overtures of Newcastle chief Freddy Shepherd. Villa travel to the North East tonight with O’Neill hoping to have the last laugh on Roeder. The Irishman must decide whether to plunge Ashley Young and John Carew straight into the team. Ex-Watford winger Young, 21, is more likely to get a run-out after his £8million switch. * But Norwegian Carew is still not back to full match fitness after a groin problem restricted his appearances for Lyon. O’Neill believes that both players will really start to make an impact next season. He said: “Hopefully the two players will help us create more chances and score more goals. “I’m not taking the pressure away from them but I don’t expect them to have an immediate impact. Even John Carew, at 27, will need a bit of guidance. “But after a bit of help he should be able to stand up on his own two feet. “He is feeling better but he could do with some more work so I will have to look at it against Newcastle. “Just because we have signed a couple of players it doesn’t mean our fortunes will change over night. “It may be that the two players need some time to settle in and next season they are right.” Villa travel on the back of victory against Watford and O’Neill added: “It’s stopped the rot and we’ve got three big games coming up now. “There are enough games for us to make an impact but it would be nice to keep the scoreboard ticking over.” Villa welcome back £8m midfielder Stilian Petrov while Luke Moore and Martin Laursen are knocking on the door after long-term injury.
