The former Sunderland player is due to stand trial over an alleged attack, which happened on January 25 last year while he was still with the Wearside club. Midfielder Cabral, whose real name is Adilson Tavares Varela, was arrested soon after the alleged attack and has since been charged with rape. Sunderland AFC terminated his contract days after his arrest. A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that Adilson Tavares Varela was arrested on January 25, 2015 and subsequently charged with rape on June 24, 2015.” Cabral, 27, who is now with FC Zurich has already appeared before Newcastle Crown Court and is due to return next month. The former Swiss international will next appear in court next month.
