I want to see that. Mentioned it before but the book is quality. Widely regarded as the best he's written. I couldn't comment properly as I've 'only' read about 20% of his output but it is excellent.

Sorry, missed this reply. Checked with my Dad. It was that era, aye. Bloke in question never actually played for the first team in a competitive game but blagged his way into the set-up due to lying about being a former Newcastle player (played for Newcastle boys ) and the Geordie connection with Rocky Hudson. Did play a decent standard in the indoor leagues though and the level below NASL at that time. He played against quite a few players who played in various World Cups as there were loads of them went over there who went to the US at the end of their career. He ended up working as a maintenance supervisor for Princess Cruises.

Chez, you know for a fact if we were sat in the pub I could talk you through those La Coruna and Valencia sides and the same goes for the Real Madrid finals against Juve and Valencia. I knew the point on about La Liga being not being competitive back then wasn't the case. Anyone who knows a bit about continental football at that time would know that. I confess to googling to check the facts but you can't really call me out on that since you went from knowing nothing about Real Madrid at that time to quoting the respective players in the Barca and RM sides and mentioning the date when Figo moved between the two clubs. When I mentioned the final in which Mijatovic scored I hadn't done any googling. I've barely missed a CL final since I first started liking football as a young kid and I clearly remember that one. Juve were favourites as they had the likes of Zidane, Davids and Del Piero playing for them and it was (I think ) their 3rd final in a row. Real were the underdogs but still had some very good players like Seedorf, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Redondo and so on. Anyway, I think you know me well enough to know I could recall all that without resorting to google.- 10610 replies

Was that the game where Aaron Hughes made his debut? And aye, I think Holland just 'clicked' at the last World Cup but I'm not particularly convinced it had a lot to do with him. I just couldn't let the opportunity pass to point out that @@ChezGiven sometimes doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.- 10610 replies

A league that (other than Barcelona) contained a side that won the European Cup twice in that time (plus had another finalist in Valencia) and that Deportivo side wasn't competitive? Right you are.- 10610 replies

I don't think you could argue La Liga was wasn't competitive at that time anyway. Apart from Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid won the league in the mid-90s and Valencia has a class side that got to a European Cup final (against Real Madrid, which further underlines the class in that league around then). Deportivo were shit hot then too and won the league while Van Gaal was managing Barcelona. It was a much more open, competitive league than it is now. Not a defence of Van Gaal as such as I think he's past it. He's also a massive twat and arrogant even by Dutch standards. Just disagree with Chez's assessment of his time in Spain.- 10610 replies

Didn't they win the European Cup during that period? Mijatovic scored the winner against Juventus iirc. It was just the start of the side that became the Galaticos. It was a pretty good team.- 10610 replies

I wasn't having a go at you for living away. I don't go to games any more anyway. It is a tacit approval of the regime in my view. But we can't sell out any more and the tickets have been frozen again so there is a drip-drip effect. If we went down again you wouldn't get the good will like last time. Not least because loads of people were tied into long-term deals then (and we came straight back up with no problems and a feel good factor). The worst thing is buying season tickets. All that money upfront makes any subsequent attempt at protest useless. -
Can't understand why the situation described in the OP is making that poster thirsty mind.
