What's he looking at?
-
He was charming, definitely not affected. Shy, a bit awkward and very kid-like. We were like 'wont smashing all the instruments up not cost a fortune?' and he just giggled at us. One of the clearest memories of the night was Novoselic reacting to being spat at by some of the hardcore punks (who were probably really just saying 'thats a canny sound you've got there') and he stops playing, points at them and says 'judge not brother and ye will not be judged'. I thought it was funny anyway.

Best gig is probably my best story / anecdote Nirvana - The Riverside, Newcastle 1989. Nirvana's first ever gig outside the US, they were on a sub-pop tour (in associate with their EU sister label Glitterhouse) supporting Tad. There were 3 bands on, The Cateran (sp) who were from Hartlepool iirc, Nirvana and Tad. Some weeks before the gig a mate and mine had joined the 'Sub-Pop club' at Volume records. We had bought some Sonic Youth and Mudhoney 7 inches and had signed up to the Sub-Pop distribution list, specific copies of 7 inches would come to Volume for us. In September 1989, we received a copy of Spank Thru direct from Seattle on Jukebox version 7 inch. Worth a fucking fortune now. We loved it, raved about it in Volume records the next Saturday and so when Nirvana's tour came up, the lad we spoke to told us about it and recommended we went, i think the tickets were 2 quid. Nirvana were on after the monkey hangers, me and my mate go to the front at the end of their set to say 'woo' etc and Kurt invites us backstage. We go to old side door which was at the right of the stage where there was a large bouncer. As you might have guessed we werent long out of short trousers, so the bouncer looked at us incredulously. However, as you might also have guessed Kurt showed up at the door and invited us in. We actually then spent about 15 mins sitting in the graffiti-strewn backstage at the Riverside, surrounded by North East musical history being legends ourselves. We discussed smashing guitars, playing to an audience, Newcastle, England and their plans for the tour. The bit which is worst part of the story is the fact that i asked him to sign my shirt and he wrote 'sweaty' on it. Nowt else. No idea what happened to that shirt. Too many to mention from when i was a kid but more recently the two best gigs have to be Sujan Stevens - The Barbican, London 2007(?) David Byrne doing Brian Eno Talking Heads - Olympia, Paris, 2010

Guitars and whatnot Sufjan Stevens - illinoise Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca The National - Boxer TV On The Radio - Dear Science Bon Iver - For Emma Forever Ago Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther Dodos - Visiter Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim Mainly informed by the play count in iTunes, no point in putting an album in the list which you've listened to less. Some of that might be influenced by what i think other people wanted to listen to too.

They weren't wearing robot suits anyway. The hype around that gig at the time was unbelievable, people came from every corner of the country for that.

I changed the Chemical's one to Exit Planet Dust, apart from the Sundays its just a list of classic British rave / club scene albums. Obviously Daft Punk are honorary. Speaking of which, saw both Daft Punk & Goldie at the same gig at Back to Basics around 97. They were DJ'ing not PA'ing.

It runs pretty nicely on my 2007 macbook. Never bothered to upgrade the ram on it, its recommended to put 4GB in the model i have but its still running on the original 1GB. I get the odd spinning wheel for a few moments but on the whole it works very smoothly. The new features are absurdly good. I'm a playlist freak, constantly editing, changing the order etc so each is 'just so' for all eventual and possible moods. This version is great for browsing and editing and the design is superb.

I meant Homework, was just a typo and i also meant the Chemical's debut album. Exit Planet Dust is the better album, without doubt. I've got an early 'Dust Brothers' 12" white label with Song to the Siren, One too many Mornings and Chemical beats on it. The change of name is obviously why they called their debut that.

You sound surprised?

In the context of the 90s, guitar based music is largely irrelevant. The Sundays goes in as it is such a thing of beauty (and all the ravers came down to it )
