The author might be wrong about the interest from Newcastle, but putting the club in line with the likes of Getafe and Udine tells it own story about Newcastle's reputation at the moment imho. I think you're completely right about Newcastle's reputation on the continent, but to be honest, putting us in the same sentence as Getafe and Udinese still makes a for a stupid comparison. I think even people with no particular interest in English football would argue that we're a bigger club than these two. Still, I guess it doesn't really matter.
