Barry Gifford is the bloke who wrote The Sailor and Lulu books (including 'Wild at Heart') and co-wrote the screenplay for 'Lost Highway' with David Lynch. Probably his best novel, which is saying something. You should read John Fante (especially the Bandini Quartet) and the novels of his son, Dan. The former inspired Bukowski and the latter is very much in his style (but a bit updated). Cheers for that chap. In chronological order they're 'Wait Until The Spring Bandini', 'The Road to Los Angeles', 'Ask The Dust' and 'Dreams from Bunker Hill'; although 'The Road...' was written first and has some inconsistencies. It's difficult to say which is the best although 'Ask the Dust' gets most plaudits. They're all class though and I probably like 'Dreams from Bunker Hill' (dictated from his death bed) the best. A great read so far and in the early chapters it really goes into great detail about the life of a miner and class differences before and after the great war. 'Trainspotting' is great imo. As for 'Ecstasy: 3 Chemical Romances', it was alright, but not his best work (still good stuff though). I thought 'The Acid House' was better (short stories collection). 'Marabou Stork Nightmares' by him (3rd book / 2nd novel iirc) is quality too and one that a lot of people seem to have missed. I've also read 'Filth' which was canny good although not my favourite.
