Fiorentina are interested in Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins.

La Nazione says Fiorentina sports chief Pantaleo Corvino sees the Nigeria international as an ideal foil for centre-forward Alberto Gilardino.

Martins is expected to be sold by Newcastle following their relegation.

His wages are high and he's barely seemed arsed for the majority of the season. Not quite on the same scale but he echo's the frustrations that Robert used to cause.

tbf to martins though, it was largely his goals that kept us up the last two seasons before this one...

so what's his excuse this season? couldn't be arsed?

he was only going to score a certain amount of goals for us, just so happened he used all of them up in 06-07 and 07-08!

At £10m I don't think 35 goals in 3 seasons is a fair return tbh. That's less than 12 a year man!

Bad finisher, woeful first touch, no footballing brain...but he scored the occasional 40 yard screamer.

Get rid.

The two volleys he missed against Pompey and Villa says it all.

No Kieron Dyer or Antoine Sibierski, seriously, I think they made a difference to Martins game, the fact that none of our so called strikers have had an impact this season is as much to do with our midfield as much as it is to do with their own failings.

I agree to an extent in that our midfield is what got us relegated.

That said, he didn't really seem arsed though did he?

I think the result in Rome tonight shows pretty conclusively that ball retention, movement, pace and passing ability in the midfield is essential for any team, even if you have a dodgy defence - its what screwed us this season and why all our strikers and defenders struggled
