Some cracking shots there. Only been going 10 months myself. See you're picking up a lot of the usual things on composition. Like where you positioned that cow, the sngle in the church, the framing using the trees, the castle 3rd way down image, the DOF on the fish, all good stuff. I like the image of the steps as well

Should get these stuck in the photography forum.

Thanks man, I didn't see there was a whole forum for photos! I shall post all future pics in there. :nufc:

I appreciate the kind words. I took most of these before I'd done much reading up on the general rules/guides to composing a shot so there are probably a lot of things I could have done better. Although saying that, it's nice to not think too much because it's only a hobby for me.

Nice pics but even better with a commentary of what they are, where etc.

Fair enough, I'll edit the post with some info! :good:

The one looking up towards the cathedral ceiling is superb, excellent composition. Is the light on the cross as natural or have you highlighted it in post-production?

I really like the stairs too, and the mackerel.

Cheers man. The Cathedral pic is all natural....the light in there is incredible so I can't really take credit for it! The only slight thing I did was use a white balance setting designed for normal light bulbs. As light bulbs give off quite an orangey light, the camera then compensates and gives pictures a blue-ish tint.

I used a 35mm f1.8 lens.

For those who don't know what that means, the 'f' number on a lens refers to the maximum aperture size. The smaller the number, the bigger the "hole". A large aperture lens can let in a lot of light so the shutter speed can be faster, allowing you to take non-blurry pictures in dark places without a flash. A flash wrecks the atmosphere unless you really know what you're doing. That's one of the reasons I decided to learn a bit more...I got sick of blurry shots or needing to use a flash.

i have used mine maybe 10 times in the past 2 years...

I'm in the market for a flash but only for portrait stuff (reflected). Otherwise I don't really like using it. Usually I'll prefer to open the aperture or increase exposure.

I'm not much of a photographer but I'm loving Hipstamatic and Instagram apps for the iPhone, they are so stylish and instantly add another element to photographs and allow even crappy photographers like me to take a half tidy pic.

JawD, i said i would show the photo re-done, so have a butchers.

Had this put onto a large canvas & am happy with the result. The only thing i would of changed would be the bigger lad wearing a lighter top to stand out from the background

yeah again kids too far to the right, though would look canny cropped but without dog. Maybe just use first as is, or crop so kids are bottom left.

The moon over Hume Castle, north of Kelso, last night...

Apologies for this rather maudlin tale, but just out of shot is Hume Quarry, where my grandfather worked when he returned from WWI. Apparently the blood from the wounds he sustained to his legs after being caught by a shell at Dickebusch oozed out above his wellies...no social in those days..my grandmother used to have to clean him up every night after he returned from 10 hours of breaking stones.

Anyway the snapper is Billy Fenwick and he's brilliant, specialising in the Borders and the Cheviots. He doesnt appear to have a website or a flickr stream, but this is his Facebook..
