Robbie Keane

ROBBIE KEANE is hoping that Newcastle United come calling in the January transfer window to end his Tottenham Hotspur nightmare.

Sources close to Keane indicate that the Republic of Ireland star knows his number is up at White Hart Lane after just six Premier League appearances and that he would relish the opportunity to come to St James’ Park and form a potentially explosive partnership with top scorer Andy Carroll.

Ironically, Keane was reportedly offered to United as bait earlier this month as they looked to prise away Carroll awau from Tyneside, but both the Geordie and his boss Alan Pardew – who says Spurs are “wasting their time” trying for the Gateshead lad – have made it clear there is no chance of him leaving Toon.

The Chronicle revealed on August 27 that 30-year-old Keane was a target of former boss Chris Hughton, but United did not strike a deal with Spurs.

However, Keane is hoping that interest will be followed up again next week when the transfer window reopens, even if his £6m price tag may put off several of the clubs targeting the Eire ace.

Aston Villa, his former club Wolves and West Ham are all interested in Keane, but the 104-cap Ireland international is waiting to see what unfolds in the next four weeks.

A source at White Hart Lane told the Chronicle: “Robbie knows that January is almost certainly likely to result in him leaving Spurs.

“He was intrigued by the interest when he was linked with Newcastle last summer and is eagerly waiting to see what happens.

“Robbie knows Newcastle is a super club and the thought of playing at a packed St James’ Park in front of 52,000 is appealing to him.”Keane has still managed to find the net three times this season, with two strikes for Ireland in the European Championship qualifiers and a goal against Arsenal in the Carling Cup for Spurs.

Meanwhile, as the Chronicle reported last week, a permanent move for Hatem Ben Arfa is understood to be edging closer for United.

Pardew made it clear he wanted to keep the French international talisman despite the horrific double leg break he suffered at Manchester City in October.

Agent doing some peddling here.

Loan til the end of the season maybe... but I just can't imagine Spurs will give us a player for nothing unless we paid all his wages and I wouldn't want to pay half his supposed wages to be honest.

Looks like he could be off to West Ham...

West Ham have agreed weekly wages of £65,000 with Robbie Keane, but their bid to sign the striker is stalling due to negotiations with Tottenham over a loan fee.

Keane, who has made just two Premier League starts this season without scoring a goal, has been targeted by the Hammers as they seek to escape the relegation zone and the club have agreed to pay his wage demands in full.

That puts the East London club in pole position to recruit Republic of Ireland's all-time record goalscorer, as former club Wolves and fellow Midlands side Birmingham City may struggle to match his salary.

However, Tottenham are demanding a fee to loan the striker to West Ham for six months and at present the two clubs have not reached agreement. Spurs are also seeking £6 million if West Ham want to sign Keane on a permanent basis in future.

West Ham had also sought to sign Wayne Bridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips on loan from Manchester City but were unable to come to an agreement over wage contribution.

The Hammers were ready to pay Bridge a weekly wage of £65,000 but City wanted the club to contribute the entire £90,000.

This will be his agent trying to twist West Ham's desperate arm into paying his silly wages, a transfer fee and giving him a long contract.

Bentley and Kranjčar would be a much better buy from the Spuds.

Fuck how much would SWP be on then? If Hammers are willing to spunk £65k on Robbie Keane but unsure about contributing to the little fellas Haribo allowance?

I'd only take Keane on a short term deal 'til the end of the season. His wages are ridiculous and we'll not meet them anyway. 3 or 4 years ago I'd have bitten 'Arrys 'and off to get him but not anymore. Too old and blatently carrying an injury with him not getting as much as a sniff at Spurs.

SWP. Hmmm. Would be a decent signing but we'd have to put up with his daddy having an opinion on our club then.

Still think he could do a job, but don't you think he has been out for too long?

The Premier League is a fast League, to keep up with the pace you must be playing something that Keane has lacked recently.

Can't see him coming here to be honest

Plays in the same position as Ben Arfa in any case. I know you need a squad, but Keane's fee plus wages isn't what we would (or should) be paying a player who'll be on the bench when everyone is fit.

I can see Ben Arfa being used on the left instead of Jonas more than off Carroll

Think he'd be wasted out there tbh. So you're probably right.

can work either flank or through the middle. reckon as you say alex, he'd be more effectively used through the middle with a license to drift out wide if needed....

Paying silly money for Keane is like getting up early and making sandwiches for work and a little pack of cut fruit, leaving it at home and going to a gastro pub for an ill considered overblown lunch.

Delicately put

Keane isn't much use anymore, his pace is going and his attitude is questionable, would end up as Nolans drinking buddy. He might still bag a few goals for someone this season but I hope it's not for us as he's got very little left to offer long term.
