Players WILL be sold in the Summer - Llambias

Selling members of the current squad: “We’ll be losing one or two names this summer, but that’ll be regenerated back into the squad. Alan’s plan is to get a smaller squad, with better quality - so the bench is better. That’s our aim over the next two years. We can’t do it all this summer - we’re not sure what the market will be like this summer when we’re trading. We will lose some faces. For instance, Tiote has been with us a year and a half. He is out there. People know he’s a good player. He’s proven in the Premier League, he’s not picking up as many yellow cards, he’s learning. How are we going to stop a big club from coming in for him? It’ll be very hard. One thing in our favour is that we now have a very good side and that might encourage the player to stay. But if someone knocks on the door and says they want this or that money, the reality may be that we have to trade."

Incidentally he's not actually said players WILL be sold. He's said we'll lose one or two faces, it's not the same thing at all. We've got at least 2 players whose contracts will expire, Smith and Lovenkrands. What he says about Tiote is alarming, but again he's not saying he WILL be sold, he's saying he may have to be sold if a big club comes in with the right offer.

What exactly is the point of securing Tiote to a long term contract, securing a place in Europe with a team capable of doing well, and then selling your best players before a ball can be kicked?

The whole sell big, buy small philosophy was important in getting our club back into a profitable position. We are there now. Wages are lower, crowds are up, Europe would crank up the revenue, yet they insist on pushing the same policy? Where will all this profit go? I think we know the answer.

Basically letting the world know one of our most important players is for sale. Just when it looks like we might be turning a corner he admits we're still a selling club. We'll never get anywhere with this odius twat running the club.

You can't be that naive? It's a very carefully planned call to all the big clubs to get their bids ready

Which in all truth applies to every single player... even Man U sold Ronaldo due to the offer being too good to turn down. Every player has his price and to think otherwise makes no sense.

I don't think it makes any difference tbh. Him saying it didn't reveal any big secret, and him not saying it wouldn't have made us any less likely to lose the player if a big enough offer came in.

He's said this before and so's Pardew iirc. So what? He's a stupid twat, we all know it already. But at least quote him directly.

Right enough. And while my initial reaction to selling a player like tiote would be "you fucking idiots" if it brought in two players of a similar caliber my stance would soften.

Plenty of players to leave before Tiote though but while they would have a positive effect on the wage roll they wouldnt command much of a fee.

The deal has already been done man, heard about in January and wrote about it on here £23m, we were offered Kalou as part of it but we said do one thank god.

This completely highlights the lack of worth of these 5 year deals as well, all they are, are a guarantee for the club that we'll get the maximum price not that the idea is for a player to complete his contract. Ba will be next to sign, and he'll be away in summer of 2013.

Kalou is out of contract in the summer anyway.

Messi doesn't have a price.

I know you're being facetious, but he does, it's just so astronomical that no team on the planet could match it.

BTW that's not the full quote, which was:

Europe, Llambias says, “would create a whole different problem, but a nice problem”, and at a club where “self-sufficiency is our plan — keep buying, keep selling, keep buying, keep it affordable, but still compete”, it might persuade the talented young players scouted by the influential Graham Carr, and moulded by Pardew, to stick around.

“Cheik Tioté, for instance, is out there,” Llambias said. “People know he’s a good player. How are we going to stop a big club from coming in for him? It’ll be very hard. If someone knocks on the door, the reality is that we may have to trade.

“If you can take players from Arsenal, you can take them from anybody. But one thing in our favour is that we now have a very good side and that might encourage the player to stay.”

why even bring up tiote though? he's touting him for sale? and why refer to big clubs coming in as if we're not a big club ourselves?

we have a chance to kick on now by hanging on to our best players and brining in better players around them. we will never progress if we keep selling our best players after they've been with us for just a couple of seasons.

However, Llambiasspacer.gif has revealed neither he nor the owner use the new name.

"Do you think me and Mike call it the Sports Direct Arena? We call it St James' Park, because it is St James' Park."

Derek Llambias Quotes of the week

"Naming rightsspacer.gif is such a passionate thing, but it's not about being disrespectful or taking away the tradition or history of the club, it's about trying to get another Yohan Cabayespacer.gif out there on the pitch," he said.

Chelsea supporter

"Do you think me and Mike call it the Sports Direct Arena? We call it St James' Park, because it is St James' Park.

"But, to optimise our commercial side, we needed to get that in there. Other clubs do it.

"Mike is a Chelseaspacer.gif supporter. Everyone thinks he is a Tottenham supporter, by the way, and that upsets him.

"But if Stamford Bridge was changing names, he'd have a view. It will always be Stamford Bridge.

"The same goes for St James'. But we have to do our best for the club and for the people who turn up to see the games."

We're not getting money for the signs

Mike Ashley is a what?!

Seriously how unlikeable can one man be?

It all a club can do (any club) to make sure if the worst happens that there is a element of control over the exit (namely the price)

Perhaps we've been talking to City judging by that.
