This is where I am with it. If he's the one who takes the players to China, he'll be there when we play Arsenal.

Theyve now had two months to make an appointment. It’s not happening iyam :cuppa:

It's a thankless task for whoever does come in, working with their hands tied behind their back. What's the fucking point? Any ambition is neutralised.

It really is a no win job. Any manager coming in is doing it in the full knowledge of all the restrictions in place. The aim is to avoid relegation and that’s it. There’s no way any manager enhances their reputation by doing that. It can only be a manager who needs the money.

How so?

Because Rafa asking for a £3mil pay rise, but refusing to commit to anymore than a 12 month extension would complicate things. Particularly if he wants total control of transfers.

We've been burned before letting  managers fill the squad with their players and then spending 5 years trying to get rid. For every Schar and Almiron theres a Sels, Joselu, Murphy, Manquillo etc.

This isnt a defence of Ashley, but getting into the mindset that EVERYTHING one side does is bad and EVERYTHING the other side does is good is a slippery slope.

Yes but the point is that the players you have named weren’t necessarily Rafa’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th choices. What he was asking for was the freedom to go after his number one targets while remaining within the stated budget constraints.

As preseason has actually started, does anyone know if we have any back room staff left? I’m assuming everyone left with Rafa.

So have Redfearn & Dawson leading us into the premier league season. What a joke.

We dont know that at all. Youre filling in the gaps to suit your narrative.

No I’m taking Rafa at his word because that’s exactly what he said. Look at how our transfer windows have gone in the last two years, do you honestly think they’ve gone smoothly?

Joselu was clearly a bargain basement buy, but Sels and Jacob Murphy? £20mil between them?

My point is, I can half understand why Ashley wanted a final say in transfers if Rafa was only willing to sign a 12month contract. Even though clearly Rafa only wanted to sign a 12month contract because of how horrendous it must be working for Ashley.

What qualifies Ashley to make any sort of decision on a footballer’s merits?

Or Charnley, Barnes, Bishop et al. The hierarchy of those s club is totally void of any knowledge about football and most of them certainly don’t care.

Of course every manager does misspend on money from time to time. But Benitez certainly did extraordinary well with the money and players he had to his disposal. It would have been interesting to see when he really could have gone for players he thought would take the club forward. Shamefully we will never know.

How anyone can still take the act of an Ashley apologist is beyond my level of understanding.

Do you think 20 mill is a lot for 2 players for a premier league team like? Mackemesque grasp on market inflation

Sure it was more like 14-16m for the pair too

With the money spent on players, anything above the relegation places was over achieving. 10th and 13th place finishes was remarkable. Yes, Rafa signed some shite but you don’t see many PL strikers going for £5m these days. That’s the end of the market he was operating in. You’re going to get more turds than top top players when you’re shopping with brass buttons.

The high expressed emotion in here clearly isn't ready for a sensible discussion on this

No, Ashley isn't qualified from a footballing sense to overrule Rafa. But he owns the club, so he does what he wants basically

Again, not every player Rafa signed was shite. Most were good. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. But Rafa asking Ashley to OK him buying who he wants with £50-100mil and potentially leaving in 9 months was never going to happen with zero oversight.

Was never going to happen irrespective of his contract length. That's kinda why he wouldn't sign a longer contract, because that's what had happened in the previous 3 years. You've got effect and cause mixed up

He may have signed on again if Ashley had ceded control and given him the opportunity to buy players a bracket above the ones you mentioned though.

Rafa’s departure is down to Ashley. If he’d backed him, even a little bit, to identify and buy a few players for more than £15m, rather than just one, he’d probably still be here.

despite being shamelessly emotive on the subject of ashley, on account of the fact i detest the air the fat cunt breathes, im always up for sensible discussion.

im an absolutely painfully slow typer so have therefore shamelessly lifted the below from newcastle online. i should say i could add more to it if required. what do you reckon ashley has added in a postive sense to the history of nufc?....

'm just making a timeline of Ashley being Ashley, i'm very sure im missing stuff:

Hired Denis Wise as Executive Director.
Hired Tony Jimenez, who later claimed Modric wasn’t good enough for the Premier League
Sold James Milner and replaced him with Xisco and Nacho Gonzalez
Forced Kevin Keegan Out as manager, which resulted in a court case where it got proven the club has intentionally misled the fans.
Hired Joe Kinnear as manager, who in his first press conference called a member of the press a c***.
Hired Alan Shearer in a last ditch effort to keep us up.
Got relegated.
Told Alan Shearer he had a job then never got back to him.
Lost 6-1 to Leyton Orient.
Got promoted, sacked Christ Huoughton the club favourite manager after his first poor run of games back in the Premier League, and following a 5-1 victory against Sunderland.
Hired Alan Pardew as they went to the same casino
   Under Alan Pardew Newcastle lost…
4-0 to Wigan, 3-0 to Man Utd, 7-3 to Arsenal, 4-0 to Man City, 6-0 to Liverpool, 3-0 to Sunderland, 4-0 to Man City again, 3-0 to Swansea, 3-0 to Sunderland again, 3-0 to Chelsea, 4-0 to Spurs, 3-0 to Everton, 4-0 to Southampton, 4-0 to Man United, 3-0 to Arsenal, 4-0 to Southampton again, 1-0 to Sunderland, 2-1 to Sunderland. But hey he finished 5th once.
Hired Joe Kinnear as DOF.
Re-named St James Park to the Sports Direct Arena.
Had Wonga as a sponsor.
Hired John Carver as manager who nearly got us relegated.
Tried to sack Jonas Gutierrez after they found out he had cancer.
Released Jonas, by calling Ryan Taylors phone.
Hired Steve McLaren as manager.
Fired Steve McLaren, and appointed Rafa Benitez as manager in a last ditch to keep us up.
Got relegated.
Got promoted under the leadership of Rafa, who would later guide the club to a top 10 finish and keep the club up comfortable. Despite being hamstrung financially.
Let Rafa go at the end of his club as he was too ambitious.
The club are currently in the position where they have no manager, no goal threat, and looking into oblivion

Think we need to prepare ourselves for the strong possibility that the new manager is already in place...they’ve known Rafa is leaving since mid May, Redfearn appointed U23 manager 21st June...

Yep. This is so bang on.
