Ben Stokes of England has received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day’s play in the third Test against India in Mohali on Saturday. Stokes was found to have breached Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”. In addition to the reprimand for his breach of Article 2.1.4, one demerit point has been added to Stokes’s disciplinary record. Pursuant to Article 7.6 of the Code, if Stokes reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they will be converted into suspension points and he will be banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player. The incident happened when Stokes reacted to India players’ celebrations following his dismissal by making inappropriate comments which were heard by both the on-field umpires. Stokes admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Chris Gaffaney, and third umpire Kumar Dharmasena, all from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires. For all first offences, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. Would be great if he came in and did well because I think you could then have him at 3 with Cook and Hameed opening. Bit of a shame that he's another left hander in terms of him opening with Cook but it could work well if he does well and then they can use him at 3. I think Root is fine at 3 but it would be better for everyone if we could work it so he was back at 4. Interesting that they're bringing in Dawson too. I was a bit surprised that they didn't have him in to begin with. He seemed to be the one next in the queue for spinners after Rashid then all of a sudden he was behind Ansari and Batty and possibly Leach. His wicket taking average isn't quite as good as Ansari but his batting average is quite a bit better. Given the amount of balls bowled by Batty and Ansari so far it seems to be more sensible to focus more on someone who can bat than bowl. Actually given that, I'd have been tempted to bring in Billings who at least has a bit of experience on Indian pitches if only in T20's. That would still leave us with five bowlers even if Broad wasn't brought back or Woakes was struggling with his finger. Root could cover the amount of spin bowling Batty and Ansari have done also. Bit like a young Paul Collingwood, before he became a formidable middle order grinder at test level. Clearly the selectors have seen somethjng in him and he has plenty of time on his side, unlike Batty. Tbf to Root he could play at 1 - as evidenced by his composed second innings knock against India at the weekend - or 2,3,4 or 5. The problem isn't his position, he's world class, it's the players batting around him. Hopefully we've seen the end of Ballance for ever and Duckett, for now.
