Eliminate the movie/TV/charidee/dead celeb tie-ins and you're left with an excellent top three, to be fair. But yes, not great otherwise.

Eliminate The Beatles and Ken Dodd had the best selling UK single of the 60s  :D

The one on the right’s laughing at the one on the left. The one on the left has a look of resignation, seeing what’s coming ;)

Pointless exercise. Numbers of records sold means fuck all (and I'm actually pleasently surprised Urban Hymns and Jagged little pill are there). The number one hit, a rehash of a good song, just illustrates the utter mawkishness of the British public which hasn't changed one jot. There was masses of shit in the 90s but also some good stuff before it became the last decade for music to take a stand before it was obliterated by the unadulterated crap thrown out from "talent" shows and music streaming. Where are the Beatles, Pink Floyds, Radioheads, ***insert countless pre 2000's bands*** now? Eh, EH?

Think it illustrates my point pretty well. Those were two snapshots of the 90s, showing just how much bilge was out there at the time. Few of the songs from the 90s stand the test of time, most of it was garbage, just like the 80s, 00s, 10s and now.

Honestly, there might be Radiohead equivalents recording now, but I doubt they'll be to our tastes. Just like our parents would have hated Pablo Honey or OK Computer. It seems like everything successful today has been softened and sanded down. Commercialism probably has a lot to answer for there. Like, I really enjoyed Kings of Leon, but it felt like after the relative success of Youth and Young Manhood and Shake Heartbreak they turned into a shit arena band overnight.

Going by the intro I expected the second one to lead to a classic jorman piss porno rather than a shit song.

(in reply to Meenzer's vids, obviously)

I think my youth gave me an over fondness for 80s music. I’ve now come round to thinking that the 70s in the UK & US had a far more interesting and varied chronology and produced bands with a huge, far reaching influence that is only second the Beatles and the Stones

Consider:

Heavy metal

West Coast US singer/songwriters

Country rock

Commercial reggae/lovers rock

Progressive rock

Glam rock

Punk rock

New wave

Disco

Mod revival

Ska revival

NWOBH

All started in the 70s 👌

Why our teenage music listening has a life-long impact - BBC Teach

Quote

Neural connections
Prof Loveday explained that listening to our favourite music has a fundamental effect on the brain; there’s a surge of activity in the reward pathways that increases the levels of dopamine and oxytocin in our brains - the same pathways that are triggered when we do anything pleasurable such as eating, drinking or dancing.

“There is evidence that structural elements of music get physically tied to our autobiographical memories” she said.

“Musical reminiscence bump is so powerful because we attach music to particularly emotional times.”

The strength of these memories can also be explained by identity theory.

Our teenage years are a time of development socially, biologically and cognitively, and we start to build our own independent sense of identity.

It’s during this period when we start to make key decisions that help shape who we are – who we surround ourselves with, our attitudes to things, what job we want to pursue, what we want to study, where we want to live.

70s also gave us Hip Hop and the beginnings of Electronic Music.

It might have was the last great decade for guitar bands, when rock (and roll) was king

80's took Hip hop, electronica and then the rave/clubbing revolution and took the mainstream and the underground away from guitar lead music.

I'd say the 80s were far more influential long term. The 70s were more of a last thrash of the rock and roll explosion

What we have today is largely a result of instant access to the history of pop music, warts and all. So you’re getting a lot of bands who are smashing together a load of disparate influences and, in most cases, coming out with something less than the sum of its parts. That’s not in the mainstream obviously, that’s recovered slightly from the 2010s nadir but it’s still 98% dogshit
