Have been barely been following football these days, but what a massive relief this result is nonetheless.

Have to agree with everyone saying its not going to be like last time around. We lack the experience of Nolan, Barton etc.

A serious quality injection is needed as well. Worrying thing is we're lacking it right down the spine of the team. CBs, CM and striker. Hopefully Gayle/Mitro/Perez can come good but the lack of creativity/flair and calmness at the back is very worrying.

Fuck me, the patter in this thread (© Gemmill)

We are not gonna be the fucking Barcelona of the Championship.  We are not going to walk this league like the Harlem Globetrotters.  Its going to be fucking scrappy at times.  But Jesus christ, we won didnt we?  We got 3 points and got 4 goals.

Confidence is a massive thing in sport.  We lost our two first games and that would have had a massive effect on the lads.  Everyone was expecting us to walk the league, then we get shafted at Fulham by the ref and some shite defending and then beat by 'uddersfield.  So nerves are going to settle in.  Especially when some of these lads arent used to playing in front of 50k+ for two games on the trot.  The crowds nervous after last season and the first couple of games and thats going to transfer to the players low on confidence.

Rafa is still trying to get his team settled I think.  But also, its a fucking hard season in the Championship so rotation has to happen to keep the lads fresh and fit.  Anita did better at RB I thought.  We pressed a lot higher and we created more.

We have points on the board now and we have a few goals in the bag and Gayle has scored 3 in 3 now. Fuck me, I think some of you lot want him to fucking fail just to say 'I told you so' 'waste of fucking money' Jesus wept.

Wasn't able to watch the game but I've seen a lot of things along the line of the result flattering us last night.

Don't really see how, from the stats at least, possession was in Readings favour but not by an absurd margin, they only managed one shot on target from open play.

We had a similar number of shots but took our chances.

How many times last season did we play well (Yes I know) and got FUCK all out of it?  Leicester for one, we should have won that if the ref and lino hadnt fucked up.

We will win scrappy games like that and no doubt loose them.  Look at the fucking 'Uddersfield game.  The possession we had, and what did we get.  If possession stats won games that would be important, its doesnt, goals do.

I'm not on the wind-up at all. Even if he picked his best possible team in the best possible formation every week we won't go up. Because the players in said team are both shit and spineless. We'll win games and probably win tonight but nothing I've seen makes me think this team is anywhere near a tilt for the title. Hope he proves me wrong but I think it'll go to tits up. These aren't getting promoted. Look at them man

You massive fanny, as has been said, the standard of the league is shit, these players (plus the ones we're yet to sign) under this manager, we'll not only get promoted but we'll likely get an automatic spot.

We can now also look forward to the Fish sauntering into the thread later this evening or tomorrow and proclaiming that we all get way too worked up about this, and that he said there was nothing to worry about. He'll probably use the following emoticon:

  :cuppa:

Don't know what you mean... :cuppa:

 Some of you lot sometimes. You don't have to be negative all the time just in case any mackems come on you know. The vast majority of the league will be as shit as them last night.

This.

We've only managed more shots on target than last night 5 times since the start of 14/15. Attacking at the 95 percentile.

All the possession confirms is we noticeably started letting them have the ball when in the lead so we could get some space behind them.

I think Reading play a possession game anyway mind. I had a look on their forums and loads of them were complaining about how they prioritise possession over success. Apparently Stam is trying to reinvent them into some kind of Barcelona.

Good shout, they had less possession against us than in either of their previous 2 games.

The only thing that's really bothering me in truth is that this is exactly the kind of game that Rafa supposedly excels in. (i.e. the other team trying to make things happen and us on the counter). If this was a case of his gameplan just working well against a team who set up in the way Reading do, then I don't think we've actually made as much progress here as we might hope. Does this result give any indication that we'd be able to break down teams who stubbornly defend and concede possession? I'm not sure it does.

Not that it's all doom and gloom - we're finally converting chances for one thing.

If we had played like them people really would have something to moan about, however much of the ball they had.,

One  pen, an angled shot straight at the keeper, a speculative effort from outside the box and plenty of corners was all they had to show for it.

I agree, I'm not saying their system was better. I'm just concerned that this game hasn't really proven we can break teams down if they're obstinate. That said, we'll have Mitro back soon and there are definitely a number of positives from this match.

I'm probably just overthinking it.

I said after Huddersfield we'll be fine and we'll still go up. The league is full of dross just as it was last time. It was terrible to watch last time - we bludgeoned our way out of the league and had Alan smith in centre mid for large parts of it ffs. We'll get promoted because Rafa will have us playing more consistently than anyone else and that will be enough. It won't be pretty, we've had two narrow defeats to start with which has lead to some people getting carried away but they'll learn how to stop conceding those goals with proper coaching, which I am confident they have at last. However I get the feeling that it won't be as much of a laugh this time, as more of the clueless wankers (10,000 is my estimate) have probably clung on due to the 'rafalution'

You're right in that the key is consistency, but we need to be consistent from the start, not some time in mid-autumn. In 09-10 we only lost 4 games in total. It's mid-August and we already have lost 2. Doesn't seem feasible to me that we won't lose more than 2 the rest of the season. In fact, will we lose less than 5 and better West Brom's total of 7 losses that year? I hope so but I doubt it.

Agree with Dickie but someone like a Kevin Nolan would be priceless imo. The likes of him, Carroll, Enrique and Colo must've been in the top 10 players in the division last time round (Barton didn't play much).

I'm not sure that the 100 points plus we managed last time and few others have ever achieved should be the minimum benchmark.

Boro lost 9 and got automatic promotion last year.  Watford lost 11 the season before and went up in second.

Hull lost 15 games in 12/13 and got automatic promotion with it.

Losing one or two a month all season long wouldn't necessarily be a disaster.

What this result has shown is that, despite concerns prior to it, there are goals in the team. Much of the complaints of the previous fixtures were a lack of confidence and decisiveness in front of goal. The brace for Gayle will do wonders for his self-belief and the decent performances for Shelvey and Hayden will help them too.

I'm confident we'll take momentum from this (flattering) win and, with the addition of a couple of players and the return ofDiame and Mitrovic etc. we'll see an improvement throughout the squad.

Yep they'll improve us. Then undoubtedly be out again at some point. Can we afford them to be?

Yes, because I'm anticipating the new additions to provide a balance that has thus far been lacking.

Most teams won't try and play a possession game at St James' and I trust that if we dominate the ball Aarons, Armstrong, Gayle, Perez and Ritchie will create enough opportunities between them, to pry open most Championship defences. Even if it's just winning a freekick or corner.

I'm hoping we're going to add another striker in a similar mould to Mitrovic so that when he's missing through injury or suspension we aren't faced with Gayle and Perez trying to out-muscle Lewis Dunk.

I'm also hoping we're going to sign a proper Left back as I think that, while Dummett had a decent game there vs Reading we need a specialist to provide balance to the side and free Ritchie up more.

A Right Winger would be the icing on the cake.

I don't think 3 signings is unfeasible and Benitez said as much earlier this week.

Surprised Wyki and Dr Gloom haven't been calling for blood tests after this result

I'm yet to see any enhanced performances. The ony thing those mongs might test positive for is ketamine on the evidence so far
