For balance, in 2018 Saudi Arabia carried out 149 executions. USA carried out 25 executions.

The legal systems of the 2 countries aren’t the polar opposites some would have you believe. Just ask any poor, black American

I get where you are coming from, but you're grasping there.  All western society has systemically racist machinations which oppress certain portions of the population.

There is absolutely no need (or desire) for us as football supporters to rationalize the brutality of the Saudis, support your club. We aren't guilty by association.

In terms of the harm they do at home or abroad?

Im not defending Saudi Arabia. I’ve seen ‘beheadings’ chucked about all over twitter as proof Saudi Arabia are barbaric. In America you can choose to be shot to death, gassed to death or hanged. I don’t see that mentioned when the Glazers took over Man United.

Saudi funded massacres in Yemen

The US waged full scale war against Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria to install Western values in their governments and gain control of oil fields. They blow up kids at funerals and call it collateral damage. We’ve joined in some of it

Open the discussion up then. Saudi Arabia has some backwards traditions and laws. It’s a complex, multi faceted issue though, based on thousands of years of tradition and religious beliefs. The solution isn’t as simple as just switching to a British style justice system overnight.

false equivalency, just because both states have the death penalty doesn't mean that they arrive to that point in the same manner.

Quote

In 2007, King Abdullah issued royal decrees with the aim of reforming the judiciary and creating a new court system.[4]:160 The reforms have yet to be implemented in full but, once they are, will include the creation of a Supreme Court,[4]:160 and the transfer of the Board of Grievances' commercial and criminal jurisdictions to a restructured general court system.[4]:160 New specialist first instance courts will be established comprising general, criminal, personal status, commercial and labor courts.[4]:160 The Sharia courts will therefore lose their general jurisdiction to hear all cases and the work load of the government's administrative tribunals will be transferred to the new courts.[4]:160 Another important change is the establishment of appeal courts for each province.[4]:160 It has been claimed that the reforms will establish a system for codifying Sharia and incorporating the principle of judicial precedent into court practice.[8]

As I said. Reform isn’t an overnight process. Most Middle Eastern legal systems are barbaric by Western standards.

that is a state thing not a US thing.  brutal though it is, it hardly makes the US and the Saudis equal.

FWIW I am completely against the death penalty as it is completely hypocritical, killing someone is wrong. Period. End of discussion.  There can't be "reasons" to kill someone.

I think he’s making a fair point here tbh, Gloomy.
If you’re a young, black male in the US today, you’re in a similar boat to anyone in Saudi who doesn’t toe the line- you’ll probably spend time in jail, your chances of being killed by the state are comparable, and your options to effect change are similarly fucked.
That’s not to lessen the awfulness of the Saudi regime, clearly, but it’s a stark example that we are not as perfect as we like to think.
