I'd prefer Burn or Schar alongside Thiaw. Don't trust Botman, he's good in patches but that Brentford performance is still not forgiven. Wonder if he's still sulking cos his best mate has fucked off to the dippers?

He should probably give Miley a game too. We can't keep playing Bruno and Tonali every single game.

Two years ago Howe continued to press both home and away. Most people were on his back given the number of injuries. It was not sustainable.

This is a more sustainable approach that is not working yet. What do we expect him to do? Should we try and press every game? What happens when Woltemade is injured and Gordon is the only person up front?

It is such a one dimensional criticism of him. It is not like Amorim where he seems to have 1 system regardless of anything that happens.

The game upset me tonight as I thought we were the better team but they played the better game.

If Pope had not had a brain fart, the result may have been different.

The club is evolving in every element other than the one that I think everyone forgets.

The boardroom is absolutely fucked - what Howe and this squad have achieved (cos its the whole team not the manager and coaching staff only) is incredible.

I'm getting the rage over how entitled and angry some of the fuckers in my local pub were last night (Away to Marseille) . Shit this and that, and hammering the team cos we suffered a mistake in the second half against a Champions League away game.

This game was always a bad omen in my mind too , I remember this was the first game I was at where the fans turned on Bobby and that was even less shocking than this - Eddie has won a trophy with our club in very extreme conditions given the fuckery above him. (Pardon Darren Earles, obvs - hope he does well)

We need to be sustainable and play with the resources we have. Its not a game of FIFA and we aren't a club thats had 10 years of unfettered spending on world class players through 2 generations (man city are gen 2 now, as are liverpool etc).

We absolutely have to learn to have gears - but this away form is baffling - especially given we seem to score in the first quarter of the game and go on to lose.

<end rant>  much love.

He's got to be pragmatic, and I believe he is trying to do that. We can't be in fifth gear every game, or we will end up as fucked as a Bielsa side. We have struggled with injuries a fair bit as it is. It's frustrating, very, but let's give it some more time. He has led us out of bad spells before and he can take us even further. Eddie is the man for the job and I think we'll be absolutely fine this season.

Everton game will tell us a lot, mind.

Nah I think you're right. We were on the verge of relegation 4 years ago. We've now won a trophy and been in the CL twice and it's proper toys out the pram tantrums and wobblers cos we lost an away tie in Europe.

Perspective has gone right out of the fucking window and the expectations are now ridiculous.

At one point last night we were 4th in the CL and had it stayed like that we'd have gone ahead of one of Arsenal or Bayern tonight if one of them beats the other by a couple of goals.

We've got an away problem at the minute, but that is genuine miracle worker stuff from Howe and his team.

And we're in ANOTHER Carabao QF. There are gonna be setbacks, but in the grand scheme of things, our current away form is a relatively minor one which I have absolute confidence will get fixed.

It’s not the result last night that pissed me

off, it was the manner in which it happened. The complacency for 4 minutes cost us. Perhaps we’d overachieved to take the lead but we took our eye off the ball for 5 mins and it was an absolute turnaround.

And somehow, despite there being 40 mins to play i felt we weren’t going to get back to it.

Sure, when you take a step back and look at it it’s something to be proud off that we can play on that stage and compete. I think I’m in part frustrated that we had the chances to have a decent lead by half time and didn’t take them.

We weren't complacent, our keeper kicked us in the balls, if it'd been a well worked goal followed by another you'd have a point but Pope basically shot us in the head.

The problem for Howe is the owners might not be as patient as the fans. If the away form continues as it is and we miss out on Europe again this season they might decide Howe’s time is up. That’s not to say Howe will lose the fans.

We were complacent with our finishing first half. Gordon should have had at least one - probably two.

As much as Pope was an absolute calamity for their equaliser, he wasn’t the lone issue.

You said complacent for 4 minutes after half time, which is what I responded too, nowt about first half.

Gordon wasn't complacent anyway, he was cowardly dogshit.

Fair point, but I think we were complacent after the equaliser. The manner of how the first goal happened didn’t help, but we were asleep for the second - in my opinion.

I don't think the owners have shown any hint of being impatient. Howe has had struggles before, and even then the current 'struggle' has us midtable despite a calamitous summer, in the QF of the Carabao, and doing well in the Champions League.

He's not faultless, but some of the noise has been pathetic.

I think if we don’t get a form of Europe, Howe could be in bother tbh. There’s a lot of extenuating circumstances with ridiculous carry-on at boardroom level but not sure that will matter

Great way for the boardroom level people to shift attention away from themselves unfortunately. It's too easy

Honestly, I think if we exit the CL, don't get far in the domestic cups and don't finish in the European spots then Howe will be at risk. However, I think it'd take all of those things happening AND for there to be a good replacement available.

the one thing these owners don't do is move quickly.

that's how i see it. howe absolutely deserves to leave newcastle on his terms. the bloke is going to have a statue at some point.

but let's say we continue this form across the season, we finish lower mid-table don't win anything. i could see them deciding it's time for a change. i do think they'll give him until the end of the season but beyond that, all bets are off.

He still has the players on side and will continue to have this unless something drastic happens. I cant see them pulling the trigger If we don't make Europe. The problem might be in the aftermath where players want to leave (eg Tonali) if we don't actually don't get back in  Europe.

Agreed, I think we'll still qualify for some form of Europe. We can't get any worse away from home at the minute, and getting a bit better would move us right back up the league.
