And the two fuckwits commentating won’t shut up about Messi, willing him to do anything remotely newsworthy. Bit sad that they’re clearly hanging their hat on him rolling back the years as a focal point when PSG have some of the most exciting players in world football entering their prime years

Oh, great :(

I wouldn't worry, from afar Newcastle have clearly been going in the right direction. keep your squad together add a couple and you're golden.

if i was a newcastle fan, given what i've witnessed at city, i'd want the owners to sort out all the behind the scenes stuff. a state of the art training centre and academy. make it so when players get there they never want to leave. get all that sorted while you wait to see what happens with the 115 and the apt cases then you'll know the lay of the land on the big spending. maybe build a womens team and a hotel.

our training and academy have been the making of us. we make so much money from it.

Watched Inter v Fluminese...it wasn't as terrible as I thought it might be. Early goal for the Brazilians didn't seem to rouse much in Inter till the second half and they did everything bar score then got suckered by a lad called HERCULES in injury time...

Co comms: Danny Higginbotham

Studio pundits: Kleberson & Jon Obi Mikel

Well that’s ruined the ‘Herculean effort’ post I was going to make about it. :huff:

Man City dumped out of the CWC by the Saudi boys. Al-Hilal won 4-3 after extra time.

sadly it was another typical city game. i stayed up too.

dominated possession.

They defended manfully and broke with purpose. Not a tactical masterclass by them as everyman and his dog know thats the way to beat City.

Their keeper had an outstanding game. And i'm being polite when i say ours didn't.

I was surprised by the quality in their side. the likes of ... Cancelo, Koulibaly, Lodi, Neves, Malcom, Milinkovic-Savic, Leonardo

Think we made about £40m out of being there. Would have liked the 100m for winning it all though.

ah well, time to take a break from football.

and plenty to ponder before the transfer window closes on my 60th birthday.

So, about 80% of what you got in prize money for the Premier League final position?

That is fucking batshit. ~£40m for playing against Wydad Casablanca (finished 3rd in the Moroccan league), Al Ain (5th in the UAE Pro League), Juventus (4th in Serie A), and Al Hilal (2nd in the Saudi League)?

Going off transfermarkt, just with that windfall, you could buy Wydad Casablanca's squad and still have enough left over to get a 6 bed Georgian in Belgravia.

It's just ridiculous.

I've got the wireless on in the background and they're talking to Kelly Smith about the women's European Champs. They asked her what teams to look out for.  I think she said Spain because they have the best player in the world at the moment.  Then followed it up with 'She's still in hospital with meningitis but if she can get fit they will be dangerous' Errr it kicks off today Kelly, I'm guessing she won't be fit.

It's even more ridiculous that it's funded by PIF, and the money Chelsea have made has probably funded their purchases of Delap and Pedro

To be fair, in theory I don't mind the idea of a global club competition. It's just that this all seems too Super League adjacent, for me.

Nah it's a load of shite all about the money. You can't fit it into the football calendar. We have the World Cup for this kind of country based comp as well as Euros, COPA America, ACON, AFC Cup etc. Then Champion's League, Europa etc and Domestic Cups through the regular. There's no room for anything else this is just cash grab bollocks with no meaning or legacy. Nice advantage to the big clubs and even the smaller clubs who managed to qualify. Chelsea qualified for it by winning the 2021-22 Champion's League 4 years ago. The NZ team in it qualify through the Oceania Cup which started as a Cup essentially between Australia and NZ, until Australia left to join AFC (Asia) in order to have a more consistent World Cup qualification path, so now it's NZ teams vs tiny island nations. Most teams are already amongst the richest in their country (if not the world) so it's another way to elevate them financially. It's soulless.

Of course if we manage to ever qualify I take all of the above back.

I don't disagree with a lot of that. But in theory I quite like the idea of the best clubs from each federations best leagues playing each other to see who is the best in the world. But it should be just that, the best teams from the best leagues. Not the 4th or 5th best, not the winner of a cup. It should be English, Spanish, German, Italian champions vs the champions of Brazil, Argentina, US, Mexico, Japan, Korea etc.

Have a simple knock out competition so teams only have to play 3 or 4 games even if they make it all the way to the final.

Same argument is said by purists for the Champions League. The issue in both instances is it doesn't allow for enough games to satisfy their primary objective - make a shit-ton of money. Establishing who is the best of the best is secondary.

That's more palatable. Have the knockout teams play their regional rivals, so you have less distance to travel and more of a local rivalry. Then you end up with the 'best' team from North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania. You could feasibly split Europe and South America into regions so they may have more than one team reach the finals with 8 teams. And fuck this over 4 years qualification crap, just have it so that only the season prior to the tournament impacts qualification so you get the best teams at that point in time only.
