Fucking Bourgognes  I used to imagine some hapless French tourists being lured in hoping for some Coq au Vin washed down with a bottle of the finest Pinot Noir only to be confronted with pensioners and their shopping bags having a couple of pints before getting the bus home

A friend of the family from Washington state worked his way around Europe and did a stint at Bourgognes, he couldn’t believe his eyes at the old people getting pissed.

It was bad when we went in the early 90s but compared to a decade or so later when those pics were taken....? Fuck me.  The clientele were positively bohemian compared to them.

The Ship is Dirty Habits now. Never been in like. Never go the Av (Avenue)?

The Avenue was the "go to" no bother getting served underage pub in my youth, don't think I ever went in after I was "legal"

absolutely love threads like this me that go off on a complete tangent.

I was 28 when I moved away from north east, but obviously a very regular visitor back ever since. all these pubs mentioned from every contributor to the thread, I know, all have fond memories and we've really only scraped the surface, from undoubted classics, a lot of which are still going strong, to some which are badly, badly missed.

football aside, newcastle is a fucking outstanding city.  :)

Aye, I would have been between 16 and 20 in my Avenue years. Loved it, part of a proper gang. The pubs on the esplanade were the place to go for truly underage drinking though, the Olive Grove would serve you in a stroller.

The Avenue got taken over by some chain and went to shit rapidly like the Barley Mow did (which was categorically the greatest pub in the history of the Universe in the late 80s). The BM is now a burnt out wreck still after 20 years, whereas the Avenue was demolished for townhouses. Shame.

I have no idea what that is 🤷‍♂️

We were more of a loose rabble or gaggle if you prefer, with our glorious long locks flowing in the breeze.

When I first started going out, there were basically two types of people. First was casuals who like sheep bought all the latest clobber and went to half the places described here, and nightclubs like the Studio or Tux.or other meat markets. Casuals tended to have jobs or at least YTS. I recall turquoise shirts were a thing at one stage followed by striped shirts. Inexplicably many had taches and perms too, and wore deck shoes. Songs of love by Divine comedy sums it up.

Then there were alternatives who were sheep in their own right. Typically students or in some way connected to the Uni/poly. This was me of course. My hangouts were the Trent, Barley Mow, Egypt cottage, Dog and Parrot, Broken doll, Trillians, Riverside and Mayfair.  Although I dabbled a bit on the casual side at times too.

fucking split personality i was in the 80s, likewise my wardrobe.

I lived in constant fear of being spotted by the wrong group of friends depending on whether I was wearing the latest lacoste top or a black leather motorbike jacket.

Aye, fucking mad on bank holiday Mondays though.

Obviously I was more Tynemouth. Cumberland, Sovereign (RIP), Sal, Baxters, Stuffed Dog and fuck me I cant remember the name of what the Priory used to be.

I worked at a nightclub called Mercedes which hilariously (not) had a sister pub called "Benz". The things I saw there man, grim. Proper violence.

Mrs is from Tynemouth, we'd do Cumberland and the Sov usually if we were down that way and not up my way in the village. Remember watching the original Texas chainsaw massacre film in the Sov one night, manager often put a hooky copy of films on.

Used to go to Peppers for years post-match. No idea why except maybe its proximity to the ground and the metro home. It’s an experience. Just not a very good one. I do recall (as I haven’t been in for at least a couple of decades) that they always had offers on drinks plastered all over the walls, on the bar, etc. but they were never available at the time / day you were there. Also, despite the Beatles-theme name and psychedelic pictures on the wall all they ever seemed to play was 70s Glam Rock. I can hear Tiger Feet by Mud now when I picture the fucking dive.

That's neat.

Long shot, did anyone ever go to Surfers in Tynemouth? Saturday nights there man, that was the peak of existence. Literally a 100 metres from my parents and where I live now. Sadly, burnt to the ground in 96 when the plaza went up in flames.

First place I ever went clubbing, remember being overjoyed when they played Lithium by Nirvana.  Wasn't what I was expecting from a club as a 16/17 yr old.  Sadly only went there a handful of times as mates I moved towards going out with were more not into that kind of music.  Although I do have a mate that I've been to Trillions and the old Mayfair a fair few times with.  He generally sloped off on his own when we went to the likes of the Ritzy although when we hit the extasy years he linked back up with us in Planet Earth/Shindig/Rockshots.

The Priory used to be the Percy I'm pretty sure btw.

Aye, you're right about it being the Percy. Pool table in a front room and lounge in the back. Happiest memory there, my newly married wife was dragging me off to do some shopping in Newcastle, I had a massive hangover. Anyway, we passed the Percy and it had Newcastle against Spurs beginning on some hooky channel so she agreed we could watch it instead. Couple of mender beers later and we stuffed them 7-1. Been frequently stuffing them ever since. :)

They've still been showing matches on dodgy channels I think.  Not every game but a mate was telling me that he has watched matches in there on a Saturday afternoon (certainly up to a couple of years ago).  Rare these days to see dodgy channels in pubs and certainly not ones in the major drinking areas.  Reminds me that I need to check my local has it on tomorrow.

It was my local for much of my youth, until it got converted in to Stereo, I think.
Absolute belter of a bar, proper mixed crowd, and served the best No.3 in the city.
Also, shouts to the Dog and Parrot, Egypt Cottage, the Doll, Free Trade, the Trent, and the Forth before it turned shit.

There's the definitive list of the best pubs of my youth right there.  Barley mow then riverside was the usual Friday night routine.

One of the very few times I blew a shift was when I worked near Shields road and we got paid cash on a Thursday dinner time, brown envelope, pay slip and notes. Thursday after work was always on the piss up and down Shields road when it was always busy even during the week, ended up in the blue bell at the top which became a bicycle shop because we found out they had jack the rippers on upstairs, from a very drunken memory they were rough as a badger's arse and obviously sick as fuck watching mortal morons like us watching them. I staggered past my pals house, went in to see him and his family who are now all gone bar him, woke up the next day blanket over me in their living room, hungover to fuck, I wouldn't mind, I only lived round the corner. Not exactly halcyon days really but you were who you were, knocked around with who you knocked around with but most importantly were young and half the time did whatever the fuck we wanted.

DK’s mention of the place reminded me I

was once in the chill out bit in Rockshots and this young charv kid off his tits ( as was I) turned round to me and said: here my granny’s just died.
I mean what the fuck was I supposed to say to that?
