I think he is a class act but we are going to have to work out how to stretch the pitch when plays (especially away). Teams can push us down the pitch as he doesn’t offer anything in behind. The wingers should be doing this (eg like Bayern play) but it’s not happening away.

I agree. We do seem to get deeper and deeper.

 

Hopefully Wissa can do that when he eventually gets fit.

Unless Joelinton starts to buck his ideas up I'd consider playing Woltemade in the 10 role behind Wissa at the head of a midfield 3 with Bruno & Tonali lying deeper.

The problem with that is we've got little contingency if one of becomes unavailable.

It's probably more the pace catching up with him with quick games in succession plus the team looking lethargic, (I hope it's this), but I saw signs in the last couple of games of players definitely getting tighter to him when he's about to receive a pass to feet which is obviously going to make things a bit more difficult for him, benfica did it in the first half before running out of steam, Fulham were a bit more tighter on him and West ham were as well. It also didn't help yesterday that nobody was really buzzing around him for a quick lay off.

West Ham were unbelievably compact yesterday - they didn't allow us any time on the ball and closed us down immediately. That combined with our shit sloppy passing was a massive contributing factor in the result for me.

And when you're facing that kind of press, you have to have confidence and quality on the ball (look at how Man City played through Bournemouth's press) especially when you need to break down the block. 

 

I thought we were unbelievably sloppy on the ball, but, in fact, we're about par for this season

 

So it's not that we were particularly inaccurate with our passing, it must be that the passes we made were safe and lacking in penetration.

i think loads of us would like to see that but eddie said in a recent press conference that nick wasn't signed to play as a number 10 because we don't play with a number 10. 

 

a rigid tactical approach alongside his loyalty to certain players are the two areas where eddie has room for improvement. 

 

i would have hooked joelinton on sunday instead of woldemade, switched to a 4-2-3-1 and tried playing osula just ahead of nick. but 4-3-3 is the style that brought eddie success and his only plan b seems to be three at the back.

Yeah it's definitely an area for improvement. If it's not working, we need to adapt and not just cycle personnel. 

We never signed Joelinton to play as a midfield general but it's where he has played and been extremely effective for the past 3 seasons.

In some respects Woltemade reminds of Mark Hughes - brilliant in terms of playing off a striker and is quite deadly on the ball himself.

I definitely don't think the answer to going a goal behind, against a NES side, who've not won at home all season is to remove one of the players with the necessary close control and vision to play through a low block. Osula's relentless running and chaotic energy would have been an improvement on Gordon, so lump Big Willy out wide, bring on Ramsey for Joelinton and maybe Elanga on the right as well?

Safety first was definitely the case. In the last 10 mins Schar and Sandro were playing multiple 5 yard passes while we we trying to postion for the diagonal. It was open a couple of times but we persisted with the easier pass. 

 

Elanga passed a few times when he should have ran at the defender and crossed.

 

Attacking full backs change everything. The space they create for wingers, especially in Gordon's case as an inverted, cannot be overstated. 

 

The return of Hall and Tino can't come quick enough, as the drop off is horrendous. Burn is a capable full back with extreme limitations attacking wise.

 

Trippier hasn't the engine to attack the same way anymore, so it's a very defensive back 4 blunt in forward movement, so burn doesn’t tuck into a back 3 when trips is forward.

we also saw something on sunday that i thought howe got out of his system  last season - panicking into throwing players on in the second half almost at random when chasing a game and seemingly losing all shape, with players out of position in the process. at one point it looked like joelinton was left wing and tonali was right back. something's gone wrong there.
