Property in the "nice" areas got expensive a few years ago because of the mining boom and miners investing in something they could spend their time off in - they tend to work a 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster. Everything else is fucking ridiculously expensive which does probably relate to the isolation of the joint. It's the most expensive city in the country from my experience.
