Probably because of the length of the songs, non-standard lyrical preoccupations, occasional nails-down-chalkboard voice. I quite like it, but I far prefer The Milk-Eyed Mender. The more standard song structures on The Milk Eyed Mender made it far easier to get into for me. I like Ys but I find myself getting a bit bored of some of the songs as they go on and on.
