Nothing's changed, he'll still be leaving in the summer For a fortnight in Corfu.

Signs are good. I made a similar point re: the player, i.e. if he did want away in the near future, then signing the contract is actually an obstacle to that. I didn't see it because I would obviously never ignore you You did and you didn't credit me either. I didn't see it because I would obviously never ignore you You old charmer.

The contracted is worth more when we sell them and/or keeps them on a low(er) wage for a longer period of time with the club not having to renegotiate for a few years. We're planning on selling John Carver? Football finances gone mad tbh.

Indeed we will. Sign them up to long term contracts and then you can demand a bigger transfer fee. Which narrows down the number of potential suitors to those you can do fuck all about anyway and even then it's gonna cost them and maybe make them think twice. So you don't deny that's FMA's intentions then? Seriously man you need to give your head a shake. Those that are likely to come in for him are the clubs occupying the top 6 places. And not one of them will think twice about financial outlay if they feel he'll vastly improve their squad. I can honestly see Man Utd interested in him given the state of their central midfield. Still the right move for the club though Craig. Toonpack is correct when he says their is little you can do if silly money and champions league clubs come knocking. At the very least you want to make sure if that happens we get the best price possible surely. are you still conceding inferiority to the likes of Liverpool and Spurs ? Try not to derail a positive thread for once. relevant comment that needs an answer tbh. Your a one trick pony bore mate. Lifes too short for your ilk. more irony. You might think we are inferior to the likes of Liverpool and Spurs, but some of us don't. The club should be aiming to get above these teams asap. Is literally what every post of yours boils down to and it's only shorthand for "outspend everyone" at the end of the day, however you dress it up. You could save time by abbreviating each one of your posts to: 'asap' and we'd still get the message.

In the grand scheme of things it's neither a positive nor a negative. It's funny that it doesn't matter how many times history repeats itself, his propaganda seems to work. What's that line from the usual suspects again..."The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist" Oh dear. Simply not applicable tbh. I think everyone (more or less) seems to accept he's a cunt, but the new deal would make sense irrespective of who the owner was. It's not a question of naivety concerning views on Ashley. Anyway just had a reality 'cheick' at 10 am and realised this one just isnt worth arguing the toss over. It's basically just a common sense step, which people can then project their own personal views onto and both sides of the debate would be equally valid. Course it's applicable, shouting from the roof tops about a piece of paper like they did with Carroll just 3 months ago, which in effect wasn't worth the andrex in my water closet. "Great news for the club", great news for our finances. Craig is spot on too regarding how much of his 5 year deal is factored in to the £35m. Jamouse I agree but that IS the only real positive. Yes and every club that signs anyone says precisely the same things. Doesn't mean the fans believe it, I think it's more naive to think they do. They just realise the implications for the relative probability of player retention (or otherwise). People I know who I regard as level headed people DO BELIEVE IT. Either way he seems like a bit of a recluse who likes a quiet life, seen a few interviews with him saying he doesn't think he could live in London, that would only leave Man Utd and Citeh to fend off. Not taking the piss I would have Tiote before Diaby, Carrick, Fletcher, Yaya Toure, Lucas and Ramires, like straight up. Without a second thought. Carrick I wouldn't feed him, never mind pay him.

Spoken like someone who genuinely can't think of another painting. This would be mine. It's grotty, it's grimy, but it's real. I've got no art culture in me at all really, which is strange seeing as though my mother was a professional artist, but see this painting by Lowry it tells it's own story to me, as nearly all of his do. They say to me he's just some cunt from the gritty North West of England who liked a pint, he's nee van Gogh but he had a gann. If you look at this picture here, not only did he have a go, he tells a story within his painting look at it. It screams "we're hard working northern cunts who are trying to get by", and he has his own ultra unique style. Give me this anyday than some fuckin elaborate pish with some fuckin naked Italian with his small cock stickin oot pointing. I really like Lowry's work. Spent a lot of time in Gateshead btw. His main muse after Salford as he enjoyed the similarity of the people, apparently. I realise that's still OOT btw.

If a club doesnt do this theyre thick quite frankly, so as I said before, at the moment it's 'damned if you do and damned if you dont' time. Whether funds find their way back into the team via replacements remains the unknown. The last window was the first window that left Ashley with a hugely anomalous overall net profit from transfers. So much as we all think he's a cock and have absolutely no trust in, it is nonetheless an unprecedented time. That's not naive, it's just a statement of fact. This summer is hugely significant.

Ooooooooh. Don't try and pull any of your 'lost in translation' shit, Wolfman!
-
True but then equally (from the players point of view) he didn't have to sign it just now I suppose if he'd fancied waiting to see what offers came in this summer. He'd know the deal would make him less attractive as a transfer prospect. At the end of the day, any contract anywhere in football is only ever of benefit to the player in as much as they guarantee him wages for the duration of the contract and residually the club in as much as it promotes a transfer fee (effectively compensation) if the contract is broken. NUFC are no different to any other club in that regard. Anyway this really is a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. All bets off til summer tbh.

Good thread. Mines actually a piece of advertising:

Our club has a maxim: 'Howay the Lads!' The current team actually makes me feel like that means something again and I'm pretty grateful for that tbh. The situation's far from straightforward due mainly to ownership issues (of the owners own making, and you never know how far that's going to jeopardise things for the team), but give me 2011 over 2007 any day of the week.

he's doing exactly what I said he would do [either here or on NO and if its on NO I can't search for it] in that he is running a tight financial ship, spending as little money as possible and attempting to stay in the premiership with little outlay while keeping the crowds as high as possible. The mistake he made was to buy into this myth that 52,000 supporters would come to games and he would be able to keep revenues as they were. He was a wanker for thinking that, like everybody else who did. The staggering thing was a lot of people, thinking the grass would be greener without the despicable Fat Fred who played a major part in the rise of the club, actually bought into this, urged this cost cutting and were as blind as Ashley. Those levels of interest and revenues were built up, they are now on their way down again. The club is in decline. Never heard so much made up nonsense in all my life. He's not spending a fuck load of coin. You don't like it. Simple as. Apart from that you have nothing to say. The truth is he came in spending silly money, which instantly contradicts your point, then the recession hit, meaning his exit plan was fucked. The bottomless well of fly-by-night chancers (potential buyers) dried up overnight, and the slightly more thin on the ground Saudi billionaires (all that was left) simply weren't interested. He already tried that if you recall? So he won't spend silly money anymore because he won't see any of it back. Chelsea, City and Man U can all comfortably outspend us. He doesn't want to compete with that, because he's not doing it for fun anymore. Chelsea and City are by the way. Doing it for fun, that is. Purely. Contrary to what you say, the financial mistakes he made were i) not doing due diligence, meaning he had to plough tens of millions of his own £'s into a black hole created by the outgoing regime's business model (entirely his own fault; what a dick), and ii) getting the timing wrong (global financial meltdown). And contrary to what you constantly implore people to believe, nobody in their right mind, least of all a paper billionaire, would buy a football club with the initial intention of trying to run it at break-even levels or to turn a few million quid operating profit. The very fucking notion. The trouble is, you genuinely, quite honestly believe that Shepherd would have had us back in the Champions League if he'd remained on with the previous ownership. And as long as you believe that then it really doesn't matter what's going on in the real world, you'll always be deluded. You'll read all of that as some sort of defence of Ashley/me claiming I think Ashley will get us to qualify for the Champions League more times than Hall and Shepherd btw.

Although tellingly, not by Sunderland about Newcastle. Tbf. -

To be fair, it's not wors. Man City sang it to us at SJP in December. From Manchester singing about the toon being a shithole. Like Kevin criticising a hair cut that. City were singing it at the (OT) Manchester derby. Adapted to 'Stretford' of course, which prompted a spectacularly petty standing ovation from me, even by my standards. -
Incidentally, my actual view (which isn't up there in the poll), is: ('good' in blue, 'bad' in red, 'not personally culpable/neutral' in black) Will spend a lot of his own money to protect his investment out of necessity, but no more than he has to, and has no romantic wish to compete on wages with the other sugar daddies. Bought very unwisely (his fault). Doesn't do things to deliberately spite the fans, rather he simply doesn't give a fuck about what the fans (or anyone in any other walk of life apart from Mike Ashley) thinks, so the upshot often feels the same. Lies without a single pang of conscience and hence trust is impossible. Wants to drive down wasted costs (and there was a lot of scope for this so fair do's in my mind). Doesn't purchase players at a discount price with the sole intention of selling them on at a profit as very simply his broader business deals make this look like chicken feed (I think this is the fans emotional reaction to a sale), but at the same time, on balance of probabilities, likely that he doesn't appreciate the importance of holding on to key players enough, to the detriment of the side, undoing good work and progress and hence again, the upshot feels the same.

A helicopter into the centre circle at SJP, in a fitting reversal of Keegan's player exit.
