Any club who signs Beckham/C Ronaldo etc knows that there is money to be made over and above what he costs them. I honestly think Carroll has that star potential. Good looking local lad who's world class. For £30m now you have to ask what is the longer term cost? You first of all have to buy another top class striker. We all know that's easier said than done. I hope to goodness Ashley realises what he has and does't get tempted. I'd be more than happy with the seeming policy of no player over £5-6m in exchange for keeping him.

We qualified for Europe through the back door more than once under Shepherd tbf. It wasn't all top 6 finishes that did it. In all honesty I wouldn't be fussed if we didn't qualify this season. It's just having more games to get players injured and distract from the league unless you've got the squad for it.
