"Even more irksome was the wariness with which the British regarded Philip when he first came on the royal scene. A poll taken in 1947 revealed widespread dismay at Philip's alien origins. Never mind that he was, like Elizabeth, a great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria. To the public he became 'Phil the Greek', an opprobrious nickname which still surfaces from time to time today. It was inaccurate. Philip was born a Prince of Greece, but his ancestry was actually Danish and German. The nickname was none the less wounding for that, though." He line is oringinally from the House of Hannover crossed with the Danes. The Danes had the practice of exporting Royalty and Royal lines to countries where the natives didn't really trust each other to run things. Our Royals are mostly Krauts as well Stevie if you were wondering. Saxe Coburg Goethe till the name changes. Aye but if a Paki is born in England, are they Pakistani or English? They're English of course they are, so Phil remains Greek till the day he dies.

England manager Fabio Capello has named Steven Gerrard as captain for the friendly with Switzerland on Wednesday. Gerrard will lead England out at Wembley in his 64th cap after Capello opted to name the Liverpool midfielder his first captain since taking charge. Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen were also thought to have been candidates to be handed the armband, but Capello has decided to name Gerrard as skipper. John Terry, who was skipper during Steve McClaren's tenure, is unavailable to face Switzerland due to injury. "I have just informed my team before coming to see you that tomorrow's captain against Switzerland will be Steven Gerrard," said Capello. "I have done it because I think he is an important player for England, according to my plans. He will be captain for this match."

Sky Sports News understands Benjani has completed his move to Manchester City from Portsmouth. The Zimbabwe striker has been left in limbo after a switch to the City of Manchester Stadium failed to go through on transfer deadline day. Portsmouth had agreed to sell their top scorer to City after sealing a deal to bring in Jermain Defoe from Tottenham Hotspur. However, Benjani's move did not appear to be concluded before the closure of the transfer window, prompting an investigation from the Premier League. Officials have been looking into the paperwork and it now seems the green light has been given for the deal to be ratified. City boss Sven Goran Eriksson admitted on Monday that he expected the issue to be resolved by Tuesday at the latest. Sources now suggest City have tied up the loose ends which prevented Benjani from securing his move last week.

Newcastle United's Michael Owen admits he has not been playing to his full potential, but is confident of returning to his best. Owen struck his first Premier League goal since October when he headed home on 60 minutes in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough. The goal was Newcastle's first since Kevin Keegan's return to Tyneside, and Owen is sure that the team are close to regaining their spark. "Confidence is a big thing in football and if you are not scoring everything seems to fall away," he said in the Daily Mail. "Hopefully now I will go on a nice little run. With the players we have, Kevin will get this club moving in the right direction. "I think a few of us, myself included, have not quite played to our full potential but that spark will come with a win." Newcastle have picked up just two wins in their previous 16 league fixtures and travel to Aston Villa in their next outing on 9th February.

Portsmouth have admitted that Jermain Defoe's move to the South Coast from Tottenham is only a loan deal, but they are confident a permanent arrangement will be finalised next week. Defoe made an immediate impression at his new club on Saturday, when his debut goal earned Portsmouth an impressive point against Chelsea. Portsmouth's faithful saluted a new favourite at the game's conclusion, but revelations in a Sunday newspaper claimed they had yet to conclude a permanent transfer for the 25-year-old. A club spokesman has now come out to clear up the situation, explaining that an initial loan arrangement was struck due to time constraints. "The Defoe transfer was done as an initial loan because of time restraint. "The full documents will be signed and registered this week and this is a standard method when you have little time." Defoe's move to Portsmouth was always dependent on Benjani Mwaruwari being sold to Manchester City, a move that is still in doubt, after his switch to Eastlands ran out of time before Thursday night's transfer deadline. Benjani currently finds himself in limbo, staying in a Manchester hotel, but Portsmouth are confident his move will be ratified just as soon as the Premier League complete their investigation over why forms from City to register the Zimbabwean did not arrive in time. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp said: "I honestly could not tell you the exact details but (at five minutes to midnight on Thursday) the two deals were dependent on each other with us getting £9million for Benjani and spending it on Defoe. "I feel for Benjani because at the moment he seems to be the big loser in all this, but hopefully it will all be sorted out on Monday and I think he will end up as a Manchester City player. "If not, from a greedy football manager's point of view, I'd be delighted to get Benjani back. I didn't want to lose him in the first place but, of course, I had to because it is good business to sell a 29-year-old and get in a lad of 25 who is always going to get you goals. "The owner has spent a lot of money here already. He's been fantastic for me and it wouldn't be fair on him if he has to spend more now (with nothing coming back)."

Liverpool supporters are to launch an ambitious plan to buy the football club from its current American owners. US tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks recently finalised a £350m refinancing of the club which they bought in 2007. But the Share Liverpool FC Group is to reveal plans for a buy-out of the club by 100,000 Reds fans around the world. The model proposed will be a Barcelona style, "member-share" scheme, aimed at raising £500m to purchase the club from its US owners and build a new stadium. As well as UK-based fans, a website will be launched to attract interest from Liverpool's supporter base around the world, particularly in East Asia. Club refinancing Those behind the move are football business lecturer and Liverpool fan Rogan Taylor, former director of communications at the Premier League Phil French, and lawyer Kevin Jacquiss - an expert in launching co-operatives. "The time is right to offer a different solution to the rising concerns that football fans have about the patterns of ownership developing at our major football clubs," said Mr Taylor, who is director of the Football Industry Group at the University of Liverpool. Full details of how the fans' group hopes to buy the club will be revealed later on Thursday, although the initial figures seem to suggest an investment per supporter of £5,000 each. Many Liverpool supporters have been unhappy at the recent uncertainty surrounding the refinancing of the club. After much delay, and reports that either one or both of the owners was willing to sell a stake to Dubai's DIC, a refinancing deal was signed last week with the Royal Bank of Scotland and US bank Wachovia. Tom Hicks confirmed to the BBC last week that of the £350m refinancing package, £105m of that will be debt tied to the club. Of that total, £45m will be used for future player transfers and to meet the club's working capital needs, and the remaining £60m is thought to be free for start-up money for a new Liverpool stadium. However, some supporters are unhappy about debt being placed on to the club, and there is also a perception that the owners' support for manager Rafa Benitez has not been as strong as it might. Debt burden "Thousands of Liverpool fans have already demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs," said Mr Taylor. "Large amounts of debt often devolves onto clubs newly purchased, but the fans know that in the end, it will be they themselves who will have to pay it off through increased ticket prices and other schemes. "In such a case, why not simply buy the club yourselves?" He said that many fans were unaware that there were other ways of financing and taking ownership of big clubs. Mr Taylor said that in Germany and Spain most top-level football clubs were not for sale as they were owned by many thousands of "member fans". "The Champions League has been won on six occasions in the last 15 years by clubs owned and run in such a way," he said. Barcelona, which won the Champions League in 2006, is owned by its 100,000 fan-members. Stadium plan Earlier this month a survey carried out by the Liverpool Supporters' network showed that 76% of 2,000 fans questioned said they would "seriously consider reducing their financial commitment to the club" if the current owners stayed in charge. When asked to choose between the owners and the manager as to who had the best interest of the club at heart, 99% backed Benitez. However, Tom Hicks and George Gillett have insisted that they are fully behind manager Rafael Benitez. They also say the club plans to build the 71,000-seat venue close to Anfield in Stanley Park in time for the 2011-12 season.
