I hope Shepherd has learnt in meantime, but think it is unlikely. For all the mistakes Ashley has done himself and all the ambition Shepherd has, there have been serious financial fuck ups by him or under him during his last stint. We still have to pay for these mistakes, especially for some of the horrendous wages and contracts (Owen, missing relegation clauses). All Shepherd has for him is that he isn't Ashley, but that's about it.

I'm sure the ancestors of Boateng, Khedira, Castro, Ben-Hatira, Özil, Aogo or Dejagah did it (just after invading Marin's native home Poland)... I think the expectations were quite high when we signed a 10m striker from an Italien top team. The thing is that he became a cult hero for some right from the start (Obafemi Martins song etc.) and his performances never got really questioned by a large section of the fans.

You probably should just stop thinking at all because it was mentioned repeatedly to highlight how poor Germany's performance was. Owen was doing all right in interviews he gave (which were very few), he even was statistically doing all right on the pitch. What wasn't alright was that he didn't get the necessary goals in the important matches, something you can and should expect from someone with his status and experience. He just wasn't worth his ridiculous 100k wages a week, but that was his only problem during his time at Newcastle so far as I'm concerned. That chance against James in the Pompey match summed it up for me. Maybe a confidence thing. Still not excusable, but so are Martins' misses against Spurs and Aston Villa...

Biffa and Niall have really become some miserable sods in the last couple of years. Owen wasn't worth his money in the end and we are better off without him, but this criticism is way over the top and just sounds like sour grapes. I'd expected more of them tbh.

In some other light the timing was the most logical one after the showdown talks in May. After being made false promises about transfers and getting players forced upon him when else do you expect someone to snap and throw a tantrum but when the transfer window has just closed and your are left empty handed and being made publically looking an idiot (Milner press conference) a couple of days earlier. Again, I wouldn't expect other people like Shearer (Wenger and Ferguson said it themselves) to react any different. Though, for Keegan apparently it is typical because he is a serial quitter, a myth that actually tells more about its teller than about Keegan.

And to carry on with this analogy. I think you can compare last season's crunch talks between Keegan and the board to the talks Shearer held with Ashley & Co. Something you'd expect from most strong-minded people. For example, I don't believe someone like Shearer would have reacted much differently.
