I have to confess some bias here. Supermac was my first Magpie hero- as a nipper I absolutely worshipped him. I cried when Lee sold him to Arsenal. That, and the beautiful ability of nostalgia to make things seem better than they really were have given me cause to look back and think " was he really that good?" Yes , he was. My god he was a monster! For me, the only player to equal McDonald , purely on goalscoring ability and hunger , is Shearer.
