Maybe, maybe not. Realistically, a player of the calibre of Owen is the player to ultimately replace Shearer, I think it was always likely we would have stumped up this sort of fee for someone like him. Have you forgotten a year ago when we tried to get Rooney ? A lot of us scoffed at the thought of us getting the fee, now we know the club would have possibly done it. He would have replaced Shearer long term same as Owen will now. In a years time though, we will now have to find a new partner for him, because of Souness getting shot of Bellamy. More megabucks that shouldn't have been necessary.

If Trevor Francis had started his managerial career with Rangers and won the crappy Scottish league he would have carried the same "reputation" right through his managerial career, just like Souness. This is the calibre of manager Souness is. The only thing he is good at is covering up his incompetence by talking a good game. Souness still thinks he did the right thing moving Andy Cole on from Blackburn, the same player who scored goals galore for Keegan, Ferguson and is still playing at a top premiership club and scoring goals, he's so stupid. It's a results business. If we don't match the finish we had under Bellamy and Robert then he has failed and these changes were wrong. End of. You can't argue with results. If he matches them then it's still failure because he's spent a fortune just to equal the position we were in when he arrived. It's Champions League, a trophy, or both, or he's deservedly out. You would expect it to work in his favour but it was quite the opposite. He comes across as a man who never made a mistake in his life and had the social nouse of a small child. I don't hate southerners. I've met many decent blokes over the years, I've watched Newcastle play in London many times and gone along with a cockney type speaking mate or two as insurance in case someone asks me the time or whatever, which happened on the North Bank at Arsenal. I can't stand patronising ones though, like Winner and quite a lot of the journalists, who think we are all idiot notherners first, rather than the other way round. I completely disagree that you need outside support to be a successful football club. Other teams might have it, like manu - thats not a dig just a classic example of their world wide fan base which is unique, but they are a 2 club city, so are Everton and Liverpool, Birmingham has 3 clubs, London has many clubs. We are a one city club. Everyone supports Newcastle. Crowd wise, we could easily fill a bigger stadium if we were really successful, and realistically, outside of their city in question, fans will follow big successful teams, that is how the likes of Liverpool and manu have their following world wide, it is because they've been successful, it's not a reason for it. We have built up a bigger fan base ourselves in the last decade, and we've won nowt yet !

It's far too early to say it's acceptable [although I know the phrase you use is a blatant piss take of another poster who is a long term genuine but realistic supporter] however, for the amount of money it will have to be successful, or it isn't acceptable at all. Even if it is, see the other posts, this money could and should have been used to bring in Owen as Shearers replacement. As it is now, next summer will need another megabucks buy to replace Shearer, or Bellamy - take your pick, but a partner for Owen anyway.

Cole and Yorke did. Good players work at adapting. You don't need a physical presence, just an ability to hold or accept the ball. Owen and Bellamy would have scared defences to death, other teams would need 3 defenders back permanently, we would have the ability to push them back instantly at any time when we got possession.
