Newcastle bid for £7m Reyes

NEWCASTLE are poised to make a £7 million bid for Atletico Madrid’s ex-Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes, according to Spanish sources.

And United are eyeing Valencia’s talented young centre-back Alexis, with left-back Jose Enrique possibly returning to Spain in part-exchange.

But Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen is NOT bound for Tyneside.

Reyes’ career is at a crossroads after an unimpressive first full season back in Spain — the 24-year-old failed to score in 26 appearances for Atletico — since leaving Arsenal last summer for £8m.

But while Reyes’ failure to settle in London after his arrival from Sevilla in 2004 places massive question marks over any move to Newcastle, the Magpies are also eyeing 21-year-old Alexis.

The former Getafe starlet is well known to United’s head of player recruitment Jeff Vetere, who recommended that Real Madrid sign him last summer.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Sun can confirm that Newcastle are not the English club trying to lure former Chelsea star Gudjhonsen back to the Premier League.

But back in Spain, confusion reigns over the Magpies’ planned pre-season trip to Majorca.

While United believe that the four- team tournament — featuring themselves, Real Mallorca, Hertha Berlin and Hannover — will take place on August 1-3, the German clubs have been told otherwise.

“We heard that the first game was on July 31 and that the competition finishes on August 2,” Hannover spokesman Bernd Reiser told the Sunday Sun.

“There’s confusion. It’s still not sure which game will happen when.”

I think reyes might respond surprisingly well to keegan.

at the right price - could be worth a punt.

Agreed. Always liked him at Arsenal when he played well, when being the important word. Don't think it will happen but it is the kind of player we should go for.

Never really looked convincing for Arsenal. I don't know his situation for Atletico but not scoring in so many games, was he a first team starter? More likely to be from the bench, I hope.

Hes not even a starter for Athletico. I have seen play a couple of times for them and he is just very poor.

just because the "transfer genius" Wenger took a punt on him doesnt make him good.

Add to that his attitude and you have a stinker.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has reiterated the club's desire to hold onto midfielder Maniche and winger Jose Antonio Reyes.

Portugal international Maniche spent the second half of last season on loan at Serie A side Internazionale, with the option of making the deal permanent.

Reyes, meanwhile, has been linked with a summer move to Newcastle United despite only signing at Vicente Calderon from Arsenal last July.

But Cerezo is adamant the duo remain in head coach Javier Aguirre's plans ahead of the new Primera Division campaign.

"They are two players that form part of the squad and they are exactly the same as everyone else. Maniche and the rest are still all players of Atletico Madrid," Cerezo told reporters.

Cerezo went on to deny rumours linking goalkeeper Leo Franco with a return to his homeland in Argentina.

"I am going to Argentina this week, but I will not be meeting with anyone from River Plate to talk about Leo Franco," he explained.

"He is our goalkeeper, he is happy at the club and I expect him to stay."

Cerezo also confirmed that Atletico are keen to bolster their squad this summer, with reports speculating they are lining up swoops for a midfielder and a striker.

"There are going to surprises and they will be very good ones," Cerezo said. "We hope to close the deals that we currently have in our hands."

Reyes took some time addapting to the English speed/physically, afterwards was quite good until

injury (lots of) and attitude problems (he wanted back home to Spain, Family, Friends, Food, Sunshine and all that) hit him

Back in Spain he seldom played for Real (he did score 1-2 goals in the final game) which Real with Becks & R.Carlos last game won them the title. However the swap (Baptista/Reyes) wasn't made permanent, and so he then went either on loan or on transfer to Atletico Madrid.

Why would he want to come back to England... (£...)

as for the little "gangsta" Ferdinand, Dawson and Co - NO Thank You !

Spurs are after Ferd.

Christ! Aren't we all ever so picky at the moment.

I suppose we can all wait for some superstar brick-wall defender and lightening-quick deadly-accurate wingers to just turn down better offers and join us because everyone else is soooo beneath us....

...And we're puzzled when people call us deluded.

First of all, he's not linked to us is he? Aston Villa look like they want him. And being honest I don't know a great deal about him. I was just asking if he was anything special.

Guess fucking not.
