Trying to sound as unpatronising as possible but that mate is just life. When the entire world when tits up in 2007-09ish I really struggled to find work, I was completely unprepared for it as I was, in a game that is very cliquey, just about the most “unclubbable” cunt that you’d come across. It’s not that I wasn’t “a nice guy” it’s just I didn’t play games with people, am not two faced and I tell people the truth (with monotonous regularity some would say) So some people would say all that is admirable but in reality it was naive as fuck; did it help me get work? Did it fuck (I wasn’t the only one, but there were groups of lads in work that I was friendly with that all had better mates/better contacts at management level) On a brighter note, that was also around the time I came across this board so my life has been even fuckin worse since then 😆 I eventually hid out the next 4/5 years in the RN shipyard in Portsmouth, eventually doing a bullshit QC desk job which I wasn’t cut out for but paid a ludicrous amount of money… I didn’t plan any of that, it all just happened. And what you’re describing is “just happening” to you. Obviously, your way out of what you’re describing may well “just happen” too…although it goes without saying people such as yourself don’t leave things as much to chance as I have in my life; educated professionals such as yourself have definite plans and ambitions; that is something that I should’ve changed when I was a lot younger than I am now, and it’s fair to say I’m still trying to work out what to do with my life even now in my mid 50s ☺️ All joking aside you’re just not ahead in life at the moment, sometimes folk are and sometimes folk aren’t. That is the nature of it. I’ve been ahead for years but this year has been very challenging indeed due to my wife pretty much having a breakdown in the new year; it was mostly brought on by the grief of us having to put our dog down due to it’s deteriorating behaviour (ie biting). She couldn’t stop bursting into tears, she works at a solicitors so it wasn’t good (they’ve been very supportive tbf) She was off work all of January and February. She went back gradually and is now back full time but she didn’t go in Monday and Tuesday last week as she’d been trying to ween herself off the anti depressants she’d been prescribed and had a drop in mood. So it’s still one day at a time but it she is a lot better and we’re off to my neice’s wedding on Saturday in North Berwick so we’re both really looking forward to that. So now I’m going to close my copy of “THE BIG BOOK OF BULLSHIT CLICHES” and fuck off to bed but remember…. Sometimes you’re ahead and sometimes you’re not… FYI, the advice is to continue antidepressants for 6months after you feel better. No harm in continuing them if they were helping

Gemmill 53686 Posted Wednesday at 06:57 Share Posted Wednesday at 06:57 I was on amitriptyline on a really low dose for a pain thing and my sleep was shite and my resting heart rate was about 10-15bpm higher than normal. I assume my sleep was shit at least partly because of that. As soon as I came off it, like within two days, it was back to normal. I wouldn't fancy being on it at a dose high enough for antidepressant.

I wouldn't fancy being on it at a dose high enough for antidepressant. Amitriptyline isn't used as an antidepressant much nowadays. More your newer SSRI type drugs. So @PaddockLad, everyone's reaction and experience is different, but that time of mine, I was on citalopram. I was off the drink almost entirely for a couple of months whilst I was taking it, and objectively I didn't feel much if any improved. I had grief I should have just worked through. But I did notice the combination of the drug with a pint gave me palpitations. So when I went on a planned holiday and wanted to drink, I stopped abruptly. I'm a pharmacologist ffs, I'm also an idiot. Anyway, the adverse effects from doing that were absolutely terrible looking back. Almost overnight the only way I could lift my mood from near suicidal was drinking, and within 2 weeks, well, you know, I was so malnourished I nearly died. This is just a cautionary tale to say that whatever Mrs PL does, DO NOT stop these drugs abruptly or without supervision. Everything in life, especially drugs, comes with benefits counterbalanced by risks. These drugs affect brain chemistry. The problem here is, if your brain stops working correctly, often you, essentially being your brain, can't rationalise it or act to correct it. I'm not advising against taking antidepressants, just to be aware the medical support available, a GP consultation lasting 8 minutes if you're lucky, isn't always adequate and you've got to be careful. Anyway, good luck to both of you. Take care. ❤️

That's the first one I got put on about 10 years ago. Sent me absolutely fucking manic (not meaning to downplay mania or bipolar disorder at all). Doc doubled the dosage to see if that would help, swear I barely slept for a good few weeks, was always "on", racing thoughts and borderline paranoid delusional. Sure it works well for a lot of people but fuck me that was a rough few months (mostly for the people around me, I was absolutely out to lunch). Switch to Sertraline which was mostly beneficial for a year or so. I'm not against antidepressants at all, and it's great that there's less of a stigma around them to the extent that folk on a footie forum are happy to openly talk about them. I genuinely think SSRI's and similar meds have literally saved the lives of loads of people close to me. Only real caveat for me is finding the right one for you, and balancing that tightrope of beneficial effect Vs potentially really serious side effects.
