Maybe investigate fasting then.

Like many, Ive tried all sorts of dieting post 40, but they all have some drawback that makes them unpleasant. Too much salad, cutting out stuff you enjoy, not enough choice.

Im pretty amazed at how well this works.  By only eating between 5 or 6-8pm, I’ve can have a starter first, main meal an hour later, followed by a lovely desert.  Too full up to even consider snacking and the body does its magic for the next  23 hours.

No hunger at all

No afternoon slump when the carb energy runs out.

If there’s a downside, I haven’t noticed it yet.

Let's not normalise missing breakfast and lunch every day. Eat 3 meals and do a modicum of exercise like a normal person.

What if you can’t exercise like a “normal” person?

Not sure what you mean? Most people can do some form of exercise. Even if it's a slow walk or swim. If not, then eating a healthy diet will trump cramming 2500 calories into a 2 hour window and then putting your body into starvation mode for 50 hours

You said normal person, you didn’t say just some form of exercise.

You're really not getting this normal person shit are you? If there are normal people then by definition you deem some people to be abnormal.

 I mean 2 billion Muslims fast for a month every year.

The department of health advice to them is as follows.

IMG_8475.thumb.jpeg.6158e22e2302040e810502b39f816814.jpeg

“Give your stomach a break and expel all the toxins”.

IMG_8473.thumb.jpeg.3faf7c27498ab4a820dc69fa9ec6524c.jpeg

“The use of fat for energy, aids weight loss, preserving the muscles and reduces your cholesterol levels”

“A detoxification process seems to occur”

”After a few days of the fast, higher levels of certain hormones appear in the blood RESULTING in a better level of alertness and an overall feeling of general MENTAL WELL-BEING.

physiatrists at Harvard are using Fasting to treat mental disorders.

Lets see what the BMJ say about current research…

Intermittent fasting comparable to traditional diets for weight loss

May also offer other health benefits, but longer trials are needed to confirm this

Intermittent fasting diets appear to have similar benefits to traditional calorie-restricted diets for weight loss, suggests an analysis of trial evidencepublished by The BMJ today.

Alternate day fasting also demonstrates greater benefits compared with both calorie restriction and other intermittent fasting approaches.

At the end of the day, billions of normal people do it, science is learning more of the benefits every day, the NHS says it improves your mental well-being and I’m a stone lighter today

Not that long ago your predecessors were promoting the use of leaches, shock therapy and labotomys. ;)

Well I'm on a run now of not eating breakfast. Possibly til Christmas. Piss easy way to lose a bit of weight, although I do LOVE breakfast.

And this is day 1 so I'm pretty hungry at the minute.

So Muslims fast as a weight-control mechanism do they? Nothing at all to do with their religion.

To be fair that's not what he said at all.

I had a fair few Muslims who fasted during Ramadan who worked for me as delivery drivers, and to a person they all said while it was hard they all felt much fitter and healthier at the end of the month

I don't doubt some see an additional benefit of it, but in the main they're doing it because their religion implores them to do so. 2 billion muslims aren't fasting as a lifestyle change.

I guess it's how you interpret it but the comment was made in response to KD's point about normalising the skipping of breakfast and lunch.

My take is if it's working for him and he's enjoying doing it, fucking crack on. It's almost certainly doing much more good than it is harm.

Whether it's sustainable or not, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Precisely. It's the need for added validation I don't get. Nothing is prescriptive here - what works and feels right for one person, doesn't for the next.

He's not looking for validation man. He's just excited about it so he posts, and then he's responding to everyone piling on and telling him he's stupid.

Day 2 in the no breakfast house and the struggle is real.

2 hours until lunchtime... I nearly broke today after walking the dog in stinking rain first thing.

But you all know me better than that.

Do you not get that thing where the body suppresses appetite first thing in the morning? Apparently it's a remnant of the hunter/gatherer age. I don't wake up hungry at all - I actually had to force myself to eat breakfast as a kid and it was always a struggle because I simply didn't feel hungry.

Nah I could eat from the minute I get up tbh. I fucking LOVE breakfast. My ancestors must have all been noble men whilst yours were scratting about for their next meal.
