how can anyone have a pop at the ref who missed cabaye kicking the face off an opponent

So, according to your logic, we shouldn't complain about bad officiating because bad officiating worked to our benefit too?

jus saying its swings and roundabouts. Cabaye shoulda won a pen, but he shouldn't have been on the pitch.

Swings and roundabouts indeed - if they'd awarded a free-kick for the blatant foul on him, Cabaye probably wouldn't have reacted so petulantly.

I don't think i've ever seen one match thread on Toontastic about a Sunderland game, go onto their RTG thing and there's a full page about this game. I'm genuinely not bothered by Sunderland either, I think they're adorable to be honest the way they go about as if we care but why do they care so much about us?

At least it'll dampen down the Pards is god nonsense for a bit.

Thing is for me when we lose under Pardew it tends to be massively depressing. It's cos of the way we're set up. Brighton were absolutely shambolic and couldnt pass the ball to save their lives so we should have stuffed them, but Pardew always sets us up first and foremost to not lose. For me his only thought tonight was to make sure a cup tie never broke out because that could only be to Brighton's advantage. That plan absolutely worked as well as it was the most boring pile of shite going (and I accept that often has to be the case during the early stages of games fwiw so I have no qualms about it) with the focus then being on trying to pick up a goal as the opponent runs out of ideas/steam and at a stage of the game when its harder for them to do anything about it . Only we didn't do that tonight of course or look like doing it. And then of course Brighton go and score a shite goal that was just entirely a matter of luck.

In the past under other managers when we've lost playing gung-ho it's been more gut wrenching. We've gone to places where we've had a palpably better team (like tonight), but then because we've just decided to go out and try and play football as the better team, we've shit ourselves when it's become a cup tie and we've lost the competitive battle. We'd score some great flowing goals and then concede when the opponent just punted it up the pitch to us and we bricked it at centre half and passed it back to their forwards under the pressure. It always felt like we had to move heaven and earth for a goal and then we'd make the opponent do nowhere near as much for their's.

The Liverpool away as an example Pardew took an absolute slating. For me though it was the perfect away performance for about 70 minutes because we were still in it going into the final phase. Because we'd never had a go at them in any massive way however, when we got beat it felt depressing because you come away feeling like we'd never expressed ourselves. The reality is though, 99/100 if we had expressed ourselves we'd probably have been out of the game after 10 minutes, and that's absolutely what Pardew won't tolerate as a manager. As a club we're more capable than most of losing a game before it's started and for me that's what he's focussed on getting away from. This is a bi-product of it though.

Good post. Hadn't really thought about it in those terms. I'm oldskool in the sense that when you play cup games against lower quality opp the idea for me is to stamp your authority on them in the first 10-15mins (with a high tempo and overloapping fullbacks) and try and score first which normally takes the wind out of their sails.

Infact this might have been the ideal game for the old Pards 442 with two strikers up close together. Shola was completely isolated which is double bad as he don't move much.

On the upside this now won't be a distraction from pushing for a european spot, which I think we are more than capable of.

They're inferior mate, it's a (cheesy) chip on their shoulder the poor sods are born with. They have a thread on all our matches complete with formations and everything, they're a dull lot but if you've ever seen Sunderland you'll understand where it all comes from I'd describe it as a not as nice mid 90's Belgrade.

They're not obsessed, though.

Nah we're the obsessed and deluded ones obviously, mind they really should have held back on their town-wide orgasm till tomorrow because they're going to look a right bunch of mugs (more than normal) if Boro beat them.

Thought perch and guthrie played well, everyone else were wank I thought best was utter dogshite, 3 decent opportunities and fluffed them. Though ameobi was decent in spells. Best needed to be closer to hi, too much space between ameobi and other attackers.

Aye, I know what you mean mate and on an emotional level that's my instinctive response too. On an objective level however I also have to recognise that approach hasn't won us an FA cup in 56 years so I try and put it in that perspective and look for what positives I can about trying to do it any other way.

As I say though, I do think it has a different 'feeling' to it as an emotion. Bit like the way it'd feel different when England went out of tournaments under Eriksson as opposed to other less tactically minded/ 'bulldog spirit' bosses when it ripped your heart out.

Brighton were shit and didnt desevre that tbh. However, I dont think we deserved anything, a draw would of been fair.

Arfa & Jonas were poor, as was Williamson. Perch was just as bad tbh. Did you see him trying to control balls when they were either out of played or the whistle had gone? He fucking struggled then and there was no pressure on him!

Strola wasnt bad and he must of been pissed off winning headers with nee support, maybe Pards will say "Now you know how others feel" to the useless cunt.

Our midfield was waayyy too negative. Guthrie and Cabaye were sitting too deep even when we had the ball and were pressed higher they were still too deep.

Its sooo frsutrating as I thought Brighton was shit and were there for the taking.

Tactically all over them, just couldnt find that killer ball in the final third. Created enough to win it easily and we nullified them for most of the game. Mistakes by 3 of our players in a row cost us.

He didnt show enough ambition at half time in retrospect but i was happy with a draw from the start so wasnt worried about it at the time either, as someone said though he should have changed it earlier as they were piss poor. We were unlucky today but i guess with all your chat about creating your own luck, you put that down to Pardew.

He's done an amazing job overall getting us where we are with the squad he has, and if you had ever managed anything other than getting out of bed by lunchtime you might recognise that. ;)

r

Bit personal the last sentence Adam. ???

I can get up late sometimes as you know I run my own business.

We've had some good games under Pards and I do stick up for him sometimes but we've also got through a lot of games just with Ba's goals. Think you can admit that.

 Soz mate, it was meant as a joke hence the double smiley. If you are going to play the easy wum card, expect a bit of back chat.

I'm not happy. If you let me and Mrs P come and stay in your posh gaff for a w/e in Paris I might find a way to forgive you. I let you get away with a lot of posturing on here as I have noticed you have somewhat of a fine mind....But don't push it. ;)

Dissapointed with that but I felt that we deserved more from that game.

Firstly I think it was a definite penalty & there goal was obviously a fluke, should have taken them to a replay on the back of that.

Struggling to see what Perch and Williamson did wrong. Willo I certainly dont blame for the goal. Literally what did Krul have to do for 90 minutes apart from pick the ball out of the net once? SFA tbh, total night off for him.

Jonas and B Arfa were let downs. Having said that Ben Arfa's slotted pass for Best in the first half could have been enough to win it another night.

I was thinking of swapping Hatem and Guti positionally at half time to get them both into the game.

Aye twice Arfa played decent balls, the rest he was cheap and giving balls away and offered little going forward.

Perch & Willo, yeh, maybe harsh from me, but they just didnt fill me with confidence. Launching balls instead of taking their time. I dont blame Williamson for the goal.

Shit luck as I thought we should of gone for the game rather than draw and replay.
