Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

I would imagine that, if it's true (and it's been doing the rounds as a rumour for a while), then it'll Richards instead of Williamson or Taylor playing alongside Colo.

Yeah, it seems that way. I can't even remember the last time he played at centre half. We'll be signing him on the basis that he's strong. That's it.

We're completely ignoring the fact that Colo is on the decline, and we'd then have no long term replacement or backup. If anyone was to leave, it had to be Taylor.

I agree on all counts. I thought Williamson* and Yangwa-Mbiwa looked good when they played together. Obvious point to make but centre-back play is all about forming a partnership / understanding. If Richards were to come in and then Colo were to get injured then you'd have no one comfortable playing more as a sweeper / reading the game.

*Not suggesting he should be the long-term answer there.

Richards is canny, but he suffers from the same ailments Mbiwa does. Occasionally rash, often positionally unaware, etc. The kind of issues that are cured only by playing consistently alongside a more experienced quality partner.

They've both been pushed to fullback because they're not quite ready for centre half.

Id hazard that at 26 if Richards isn't ready for centre half its unlikely he ever will be. At fullback he's just as bad, he's not got a look in at national level since Croatia beat England at Wembley putting them out of Euro 2008.Richards is still looking for Luka Modric now, he spent the whole night completely the wrong side of his man. Avoid.

I'd agree with that.

I'd say a CB's best years are generally between 28-32 and the reason for that is that is because that's when their mature head overlaps with being at their peak physically. They reach their physical peak earlier though. I think Colo needs a physical partner over a footballing one, and Richards is preferable in that sense to anyone we have.

French media are reporting that Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s nightmare stay at Newcastle could now finally be over, at least in the short-term.

It is reported that Mapou has agreed the details of am initial season long loan deal with Marseille, including wages, with it now awaiting Newcastle United giving the go ahead to the deal.

The 25 year old still has four years left on his United contract and has been given next to no chance at centre-back by Alan Pardew.

Foot Mercato report that the Newcastle player has concluded all arrangements with Marseille and despite apparently carrying an ankle injury at the moment, he will link up with the French club as soon as United give it the green light.

Marseille had a desperate start to the season and conceded five goals in their opening two matches to lowly Bastia and Montpellier, picking up only one point in the process.

They steadied the ship with a single goal win against Guingamp last weekend, for who Sylvain Marveaux played the full ninety minutes.

Newcastle are obviously desperate to get Mapou out of the club but whether a loan deal would lead to Mike Ashley allowing another incoming transfer(s) is open to question.

They'll never become ready by playing fullback, completely different positions. You've got to persist and if it then doesn't work you move on. We've botched the approach with MBiwa, but he has also done himself no favours. From the little that we've seen I think he's one of those players who looks technically good and confident when he's not under pressure or having to make a split second decision, however the moment that changes it quickly falls to bits. The last player who sticks in the memory like that was David Rozenhall.

'"Perhaps because in England they see things in a different way, everything there is based on physicality''

i.e Pardew didn't think he was tall enough.

And the rest of that quote....

"However, here it's more about ball possession and I believe that the Serie A is more similar to the Ligue 1".

Right.

He's gone to play some football basically - because Rudi Garcia isn't a complete idiot when it comes to management.

If he was 6'4 he would have started every game under Pardew.

He's shite - which is why he's ended up at Roma - who challenged for the Scudetto last year and qualified for the champions league - winning their first ten matches under a manager who knows that Yanga-Mbiwa is a good player because he watched him captain a Montpellier team to the ligue 1 title aged 23 - vs PSGs Arab money and the traditional big French clubs. He's also a fully capped French international.

Or Alan Pardew is shite.

Err...

If Pardew gets all the blame when a player comes from a different league and does shit, does he get all the praise when they do well? Debuchy, Cabaye, Cisse, Sissoko, Haidara, etc. Does that mean Pardew is an absolute genius when it comes to developing foreign talent?

My feeling is that a lot of it depends on the player, and blaming Pardew for a Ligue 1 player not living up to the hype in the Premier League is a bit ridiculous. He played at CB and he was terrible (Everton game comes to mind).

Loaning him out was stupid, but Pardew is not the lone reason he wasn't a good player for us.
