It's not all about time saving though. It's about capacity.

What people don't seem to get also it's its not just capapcity on the Manchester-London line, it would release capacity on the conventional lines to improve local rail as well as freight. Nothern Power House won't work without it.

HS2 was only ever going to be cost effective with the whole "Y" set up as planned. The Leeds line would have served Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds (all directly), and York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Once that was scrapped the project made little financial sense. By scrapping the Manchester connection, it is now a complete waste of money. And the irony is a lot of the sunk costs was due to having to burrow tunnels through fucking fields to appease tory seats. They are now going to have about 3 trains per hour going through them rather than the 20 envisioned.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd. But if this doesn't tell you something about how our long-term politics are fucked you're missing the point (not you ewerk).

I was speaking to someone about HS2.  He said that two tunnel boring machines have been dropped in at London to bore into Euston, but they've not moved as they don't know how they're connecting to Euston at the moment.

It's a farce of epic proportions.

Put my nerd hat on here, that's a daft map. If they're defining high speed as >140 kph, most of the UK should be on it coloured blue, certainly ECML, WCML (both 240 kmph) and GW, probably a host of others. But most of France, Italy, and Spain, probably Germany too, are actually >300 kmph.

Anyway, the failure of us to deliver this is just a symptom of the failure of a country. The North will enter the 22nd century with Victorian railways. London though, not so much with HS1, HS2 (albeit only Acton to Birmingham), cross link, and cross link 2. What is even the point of the North of England to these cunts? WHat fucking idiot in the North would vote for them? Reminds me of.

ECML is 200km/h which is pitifully slow by modern standards.

Yeah, I think you're right, they actually downgraded it when the Azumas entered service. And iirc there are/were (?)  issues with them even running under wires north of York. Agreed, pathetic.

Tony Benn saw what was coming

Never understood the obseesion with Benn. A silver spooned toff, never had to practice what he preached. He lived an incredibly priveliged life style, he would have thrown up if someone asked him to eat beans on toast. 1982, Michael Foot. The labour left had their chance, then and under Corbyn. Both times utter disasters. I don't want Marxism. I want a scandinavian style of socialism and capitalism. A country that is fair and works.

I went to a lecture he gave in the early eighties and he was an absolutely inspirational speaker. It made so much sense at the time, but it was hard to explain afterwards. A bit like what I feel like when I watch something on quantum physics, makes perfect sense when I'm watching bit I couldn't explain a word of it later.

Anyway, I think he was a better politician than and a much better mind than Corbyn, and I dont think you can argue the fact that Labour has turned itself into Tory-lite through fear of the press. The point I was agreeing with was any form of socialism is off the agenda and I fear Starmer will just mark time till the Tories get back in

Well, politics is somewhat subjective so I'll let you off. You might be right about quantum physics/mechanics if you even think you understood it. ;)

You aren't getting anything anywhere near that with Starmer.

Then when he goes and a Badenoch/Braverman led tory party regains power they'll go even further rightward under Streeting.

You might be right, might be wrong. It'll be better than the tories though. And wth characters like Foot and Corbyn, that's the only other option given the demographics of this country, FTP and the media control. Just for the record and for clarity, of course I would have preferred Corbyn and McDonald to ANY tory cunt and they got my vote in 2017 and 2019. They could never command a national majority vote though, is that noy obvious? Benn couldn't claim they never had the chance, they did. My biggest disappointment in Starmer though is he won't support PR so we are all represented.

This. No one is coming back to vote for round two of Starmer's nothingness. The one thing he has going for him atm is the Tories being total shite.

Each to their own, but on the day Queen Cunt says being discriminated for being gay or female isn’t enough reason to claim asylum, why are we dissecting Starmer’s weaknesses?

These cunts are in power, now, and are destroying everything decent that we’ve ever stood for.

Starmer is a bit grey, but ffs, he’s not a monster.

Until we get PR, it’s a two-horse race, with the Lib Dem’s sucking off whoever promises them a bigger bag of sweets.

The pressing issue right now, imo, is not what Labour might or might not promise to do in order to win back the red wall Tory cunts, it’s getting these fucking animals out of power asap.

Deal with the replacement’s weaknesses afterwards.

Rant over, as you were.

I respect the view but there will never be a 'dealing with the replacement's weaknesses' moment. I'm done compromising for this shit, I'm too old for the fantasy that there is ever going to be a moment when it will be 'agreeable' for an actually productive discussion on how to help this country move forward. Every time we concede, Labour go to the right. Austerity, Brexit, the lot.

I'm not conceding anymore, Starmer is going to have to bring his ass back this way if he wants my vote. I'm not being complicit in this slow motion car crash anymore.
