The 23-year-old was not even registered in United’s first team squad last season by Alan Pardew before being farmed out on loan to Glasgow Rangers at the turn of the year. However, it is understood that Ferguson will get his chance to shine under Steve McClaren and is expected to be on the plane for the club’s trip to the United States this weekend. Sources at Cambridge United have indicated that ex-Toon reserve chief Richard Money wanted to to take the Northern Ireland international on loan at the League Two club. But their hopes were dashed when McClaren made it clear that he wants to run the rule over the one-time promising left sided player himself in games against Club Atlas in Milwaukee, Sacramento Republic and Portland Timbers. Ferguson is still highly regarded by his country and is likely to be included in Northern Ireland’s squad to face the Faroe Isles and Hungary in Euro 2016 qualifying matches. Ferguson’s fellow left-sided colleague Sylvain Marveaux is another who will be handed the chance to shine in the club’s pre-season fixtures after being handed a clean slate by McClaren following a season out on loan at Guingamp last term. If we get proper strikers then Shane and his sweet left foot would be a great option from the bench. As for Marveaux, if we are trying to play the ball on the deck it would again be good to see McClaren and co manage to get him at the top of his game.
