You think this is a recent thing? The vast majority of "elite" sports leagues have essentially been two-horse races since the dawn of time. The two favourite horses change periodically and the financial backing adjusts accordingly, but it's always been a big human cattle market.

The Cambridge and Oxford boat race is, I'll give you that one. As for football? The richest clubs, the ones with the richest owners usually did the best, even in the days of amateur football where a rich owner would employ a talented footballer at his mill or whatever, that's now been stopped by the clubs who've benefited from it in the past and don't want to overtaken by anyone else. The blue riband event in English football was always the cup, Liverpool didn't win their first until 1965, who would argue that Liverpool aren't one of the two biggest clubs in England right now? You have to have a chance to grow as a club and that is now being denied to other clubs who are ambitious and have the means to truly compete.

I understand that the cartel at the top of the PL will operate to protect its dominance and look for ways to siphon off the majority of the money into their own coffers. What I don't understand is why the rest of the PL go along with it. Unless they have no intention of competing and just want a level field for the also rans?

The yanks are voting with each other. Once there are 14 yank owners in the PL (look out for Wrexham and Birmingham City) they'll have complete control. Then relegation will be abolished and premier league games will be played in Chicago and Baku :cuppa:

This is why we need to install an independent regulator. So that we can enshrine (in law if needs be) that promotion and relegations remain as a core part of the English league system.

Also someone who could tweak the PSR rules to better protect the other 14 from the existing oligarchy, without restricting ambitious clubs unfairly.

Mate of mine was in motherwell yesterday. He stopped off to have a look around the ground. Someone came out and asked if he was OK. He said he was just visiting the area and stopped off at the ground. So they invited him in and took him on his own tour. Brilliant.

I’m surprised he wasn’t introduced to the team.
