Funnily enough I was sat in a management meeting in the hospital last week and I was the only bloke in a room of 16 people. I know nursing is dominated by women but not to that level.

It Comes At Night.  Never have I been in a cinema before where there has been a reaction at the end of a film like there was for this.  That reaction (which seemed to come from most of the other attendees but may have just been from a single group) was anything but positive.  Some of them loudly stating that it was terrible and other laughing in disbelief.  

I have the feeling that those people went into the theatre expecting a full on horror film full of gore and shocks.  And I think this probably due to poor marketing (or maybe excellent marketing as it might end up with more people buying tickets even if they don't enjoy it).  Rather than a horror or even a sci fi film, it's more of a drama about a family living in a time of horror.  Personally I was enjoying it but I found the end completely unsatisfying.

It's one of those films you have to watch 3/4 times to get all what is really going on. Kubrick was pretty in and high up in Masonic circles.

I'm not going to lie, I honestly couldn't give two fucks who the red cloak is  Zeigler or not he's clearly a right seedy rich bastard who loves a bit of filth.

 

 

If you analysed every film like that your head would be battered, especially Kubrick films. I tend to just work out what I see in the film and that's that, I'm quite perceptive in that sense. Imagine pausing it to jot down notes

To add, I watched Three Days Of The Condor yesterday with Robert Redford. Although there's not a lot goes on it kept me guessing for the duration and was a decent plot in the end.

Good film that.

 

I only really analyze Kubrick or Lynch cause they are heavily coded and rich in symbolism. You're missing half the film if you just do a surface reading. People are telling us stories via cinema and the moving image which is the dominant form of our times.

Like I say I work out most things when I watch a film, each to their own though. Absolutely nothing wrong with delving deeper into the story, I just prefer to take it on first viewing and let the ambiguity take care of itself. Keeps it interesting for me.

 

When it comes to ambiguity, a lot of people hate it, they want a clear, no-nonsense ending on a plate and just move on. I'm of the belief if you truly understand the film script you can understand how a film ends, for many they get lost in the script so an ambiguous ending just confuses them and they walk away with nothing but negativity about the film, even if they enjoyed most of it. The same goes for TV shows, if people don't get into a script early they just give up on it, people want basic storylines where they don't have to invest too much psychologically to enjoy it, it all boils down to being force fed mind numbing TV 90% of the time. Although TV series have improved massively in recent years and are now producing some great scripts and attracting the higher calibre of writers and actors.

 

Take the recent Fargo series for an example, for me it was a great bit of writing and the Vargas character was one of the best yet, such a complex character and well delivered by Thewlis. I've read a lot of comments from viewers who didn't like the series and thought it was the worst one yet, their reasoning being the series started off slowly and they turned off after a couple of episodes because nothing was happening, which is ridiculous considering a story builds as relationships evolve (Or devolve in this case). 

 

Anyways I've went off on a tangent, I'm a big Kubrick fan.

I love an ambiguous ending if its a good ending.  The endings of most of Lynch's work (particularly Twin Peaks and Muholland Drive) are brilliant.   The ending of It Comes At Night wasn't ambiguous, it was clear what was happening.  It just wasn't good.

The new planet of the apes.  It's nice to see a blockbuster that isn't based around a Marvel or DC character for a change.  Probably my favourite of the three new films.

The premise for the movie could've worked really well but it was fucking daft

 

I think they did the panic/paranoia stuff a bit better than you do, but most of it came before the other family arrived.  Totally agree with you on the way it went from then.

 

Agree with your scoring of it too.  The other reactions I've seen for it seem to swing from brilliant to one of the worst films ever made.  To me it was certainly neither.

fwiw I enjoyed the Spiderman film, but it was spoiled by way too much given away in the trailers. Each action scene was teased in the trailers, so there were few moments that really popped. 

 

Good to have a decent villain in a Spider Man film though, Keaton was much more menacing than all but Molina's Doc Ock. And like Molina's villain, I actually felt a degree of sympathy for his motivations. He wasn't just evil baddy that is evil because Spider Man is good. Holland was good at both Peter PArker/Spider Man. The comedy bits were well timed and delivered, although Flash was a bit shit. He's supposed to be the school bully, but turned out a bit lame. Seemed like he'd be the type of kid who'd be bullied or be the bully's sycophant pal. The cameo's from the other established Marvel stable members were appropriate and the chemistry between Stark and Parker worked for me too.

 

No huge CGI destruction porn sequence, the CGI was mostly unnoticed in fact. Plot skips along at a good pace and there weren't any glaring plot holes I spotted. Less for the casual movie goer to get thrilled about, especially if you've watched the trailers.

 

If you enjoy Super Hero movies and are a bit of a fan then it's certainly worth a watch, if you don't then it's not worth going to the cinema for. 

 

Liked Donald Glover's appearance, and his character is a nod to another character from the comics. But then I like Donald Glover in everything he's done thus far.

Nerd\ Aaron Davis is the Prowler in the comics, a career burglar who steals a spider from Oscorp, the same kind of Spider that gives PP his powers. That Spider bites his nephew, Miles Morales, letting him become an alternate universe's Spider Man. This is referenced in Homecoming which makes me think that they've at least got one eye on what comes after Tom Holland's Spider Man. Oh, and the furore about the 13th Doctor being a woman it reminds me that just because MM is a mixed race lad, some Broflake nerds lost their mind but he has since gone on to become very popular... /Nerd

If the best bits are in the trailer I'll give it a miss.  The trailer is fucking awful.  Shame as I really liked the first two spiderman films.  The last two were pretty wank particularly the venom one.
