Him and his mate, both obsessed with Chess, were sat in the lobby of a hotel, trying to outdo each other last Christmas

The manager threw them out saying,

” Sorry, no chess nuts boasting in an open foyer”.

If he's got a meth habit he's most likely from Geelong but just tells people he's from Melbourne.

BTW @Monkeys Fist there's still a few other teams in Melbourne that play that ridiculous fucking game.

Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs aka Fitzroy (I had a mate who supported them and literally died of a heart attack after they finally won a trophy after 50 years), St Kilda, Essendon, Melbourne, North Melbourne and Richmond.

It's such a provincal game that 10/18 team in a national league come from one city with just 5 million people, fucking stupid.

I’ve pitched a “Super Sat’da” competitive giant leek growing league to Sky , with teams made up of the various different allotment associations in Eshinton and Bairdlintin.

They told me never to contact them again.

Great article here about the threat to the Pacific North West of America and Canada from the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-one

It’s a tectonic fault line about 80 miles offshore, running from Northern California up to Vancouver Island.

Unknown until about 40 years ago, its cycle of activity runs roughly on a 250 year pattern, and it’s now 100 years overdue.

When it does go, and it will, it’s going to be catastrophic- the land will drop by approximately 6 feet and rebound westwards for about 30-100 feet.

That will cause a Tsunami which will hit land approximately 15 minutes after the quake. ( A wave anywhere between 20-100 feet is expected, depending on local topography).

“Kenneth Murphy, who directs FEMA’s Region X, the division responsible for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, says, “Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.”

In terms of preparation in the US, it’s basically …

IMG_2925.gif.49a1ec02299c4c9675b17902c71f2637.gif

Within the inundation area, any survivors can expect no power for 6 months, no mains water for over 1-3 years, no permanent hospital facilities for 3+years.

They’ve got Tsunami zone warning signs up when you drive along the west coast of Vancouver Island. I didn’t actually realise the threat was quite so localised though. When I saw them I assumed it was just because there’s lots of potential for earthquakes in the pacific which could trigger a Tsunami and they were being cautious after the massive Indian Ocean one

They've got tsunami zones marked out in Oregon too, public warning systems and all that. Mind you there's still schools, hospitals and what not within those areas so not sure exactly how seriously they are prepared.

The general American attitude is probably a bigger threat than lack of preparedness tbh. In Texas they seem to be pretty well prepapred for extreme weather, and north Texas does get a lot of it. Sirens go off for hail, tornados. You also get alerts on your phone, and they tell you exactly what the threat and danger is and what time exactly the storm will be where in the area. Quarter size hail, golf ball size, baseball size. Doesn't stop some from pulling out their trucks and driving off as the alarms are going off  Just yesterday Dallas got battered by hurricane force winds. I looked out the window for a brief moment and in that time saw at least 3 people get into their trucks, one of them literally feet away from a place where the roof was flapping and about to come down.

You know the season is over when MF digs up 9 year old articles. It is a pretty good one though to be fair to him.
