I think he has a reputation for his 'favourites'  I.e Burn, Big Joe etc.  But when they're actually preforming can you blame him?  Burn has been needed at LB this season due to injuries.  However surely bringing him off earlier in some games to rest him would have been wiser?  Big Joe.  He hasn't been right all season yet has had a load of game time.  In a way he did the same with Gordon, but when Barnes started producing he had no choice to play him.

Might be result affected but my current thinking is that it won't be a bad thing if we lose on Wednesday. I just can't see us beating two from the remaining teams as it stands. It's a shitter but that's how I feel.

We beat the top 4, as was, to win it last time though 😉

I get the dilemma of this. In the ideal world I'd want us to go as far as we can in every competition we enter, but realism determines we're not going to win them all so there is a need to define priority. For me it's

1. Qualify for Europe (preferrably CL)

2. Go as far as well can in this season's CL (to boost our UEFA Coefficient)

3. FA Cup

4. Carabao Cup.

The jury is still out for me, but I do wonder if he lacks the dynamism to quickly recognise when something is no longer working, or his opponents have worked him out. Feels rotten to say it given how he played Slot like a fiddle for the Carabao final but there's been one too many times this season that he's put of the same game plan that quite clearly isn't working.

The mackems will be absolutely loving their visits to this place today.

As I said to one of the ones I work with today, they didn't beat us ... we beat ourselves.

So despite all our our issues, and I agree with a lot of what has been said on here - the exec shit show, the attempt to change playing style, the piss poor show from some of our expensive summer signings, the drop off in levels of some of our top players etc etc -  the nature of the league and inconsistency many teams are showing means we are still 4 points off 5th place. A half decent run can still propel you right up the table and things quickly start looking very different again.

I just don't know what Howe tweaks this time to achieve that. Nothing seems to be working because at the end of the day individual levels have been largely terrible this season and the players do need to step up. I don't think Howe is blameless, I think he's tried to navigate a difficult summer and do the best with this squad given our CL commitments but it has not worked. We've been terrible to watch for a while now as well and eventually that catches up to a manager. But I find it hard to blame him for some of the absolute individual dross we've seen lately from mind bogglingly stupid goals conceded to the likes of Elanga, Joelinto, Gordon and Willock not being able to make 5 yard sideway passes.

Calm heads prevailing. Exactly what is needed.

Good. Hopefully part of that patience comes from the notion that rather than just 'sharing in responsibility' out of a sense of fraternity and team-building, they're also doing it because they recognise their own culpability.

Decent article.  This was interesting

Newcastle want to add, as a minimum, a defender but may also look to sign a striker

Apparently we have been looking at Tarik Muharemović.  I wonder if they will look at another CB or go full back.

Another CB would see the end of Schar I would think.

As frustrating as the season has been so far it should be noted that a lot of teams are struggling with consistency. I can’t remember a season where so many teams are totally underperforming and struggling with confidence. Even Villa had a very poor start with people starting to question Emery and his recruitment until they went on another run and breeding confidence.

Thought that was a poor presser from him yesterday. Bit tone death, poor answers and a bit rabbit in the headlights.

First one he’s done that I thought was poor.

I'm aware I'm stating the obvious, but this is an Important couple of weeks for Howe. Lose against Fulham, Chelsea and PSV and it's potentially a repeat of 2023 where we dropped out of the CL, race for the top 4 and lost the Carabao Cup a few weeks apart.

PIF might start getting a bit twitchy as we head into the transfer window.

In that case they'll do well to remember we won our first trophy in seven decades and qualified for the CL again the following season.

Also, if all those things happened, we'd be having more or less the sort of season a club at our stage of development might expect to have.

We're not Man City or Arsenal. If the ownership would like to make us more like them, they know what to do. And it's not sack the manager.
