“I did my knee against Brentford but then played two games after that (without realising). It blew up the day after Sheff United game & the scan showed some big damage in my knee…

“Some people (specialists) said it was a total rupture, others said that it wasn’t. So I’ve done everything to rest and avoid surgery. The operation would’ve kept me out for 9 months but I’m back & feeling like my old self again — so it seems like I made the right choice.”

That is shocking, if completely accurate. As much as it was frustrating to see Murphy do his shoulder again, I understand the thought process. It is crazy that specialists can give such difference in advice.

A friend of mine is a knee specialist. I've just asked if damage like this bad can be sorted by rest his reply

'well I gave him the advice so yes'

I wouldn’t have thought that a physio would’ve been part of the diagnosis team, especially one who’d been on extended parental leave for months..

It's the physios job to diagnose player injuries and develop treatment plans. Might be 2+2=5?

Wouldn’t an orthopaedic specialist be more appropriate? Am sure the physios are the first line of assessment but the final call should really go to a suitably qualified doctor? Especially if it’s a serious as an ACL? 🤷🏻‍♂️

You've said it. If the head physio misses the issue, doesn't make a specialist referral or ask for a scan, and then 2 games later Botman blows his knee out, whose fault is it?

It's all conjecture anyway. But Botman clearly isn't happy and then our head physio leaves his post the same day...

Is that a doctor’s job to identify or the physio?

As a nurse I obviously don’t expect you to know the answer.

Aye. He's worked on quite a few Prem players including Kane in the past.

So assuming he has given advice here.

Hes not South African is he?

Honestly not sure whose at fault but it sounds like this bloke has been out on paternity for a substantial amount of the 13 months he’s been at the club, and also didn’t move his family up so was traveling back south a lot - seems it was more a poor fit?

Whoever is in charge of that side of things has been doing a shite job anyway, Botman is only one example of consistently rushing players back from injury - Isak and Murphy have both been rushed back before making their injuries worse this season. Hopefully it’s fixed going forward.

I came to post this and hadn’t seen the (very astute) Martin Samuel article…. taken in conjunction with the head physio suddenly leaving, is the malaise on the field indicative of a fuckin basket case behind the scenes? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔

Wasn’t the head physio on very long paternity leave which could be a very serious personal issue for him? I notice it hasn’t taken long for the lads who love to bathe and revel in bad news long to fly to their usual conclusions about fucking everything again

Yeah I heard he’d never actually moved his family up north. I also heard that he definitely missed Botmans ACL and was sacked because of that 🤷🏻‍♂️
