Toonpack 15587
This is great,a diary of the 80/81 season. https://www.nufc-history.co.uk/nufc-1980-81-diary.html Example: "Without planning permission" the gall of it. Not to mention floodlights !!!! Oh the horror. 14/07 - Newcastle reveal their plans for the redevelopment of the ground to the City Council. The club say they need 15 years to finish the scheme, but the Council want the work to be completed before then. Residents in Denton Burn who are already unhappy that the club have built an all-weather pitch on their training ground (without planning permission) are even more incensed about the plans to install floodlights. Exeter's coach says: "Newcastle United are not the Newcastle United of old, and after Saturday’s game my players believed me” I was at that one. Fairly bleak
Wardi 398
Yep, I was at that Exeter game - I went by train and got home around 08.30 the next morning. Dark days indeed. On another note.. IIRC in that era you could get a cheap or free train ticket for a fellow traveller using vouchers from Persil washing powder. Very popular with the Toon fans travelling to away games. My Mum was most impressed with the amount of Persil around the house!
Howmanheyman 43926
I wasn't at the Exeter game, my first game wasn't until 1983 but I know a few who were, one of them still bemoans having to sell one of his blondie albums to help finance his trip to Exeter just to see us humiliated. Dr Gloom 26337
the league is so tight this year, you can climb and fall quite a bit in a single weekend. if those results play out sunderland will have fallen from 4th to 12th over two game weeks. it probably won't shake out until the new year when at some point a group at the top will break away (it's arguably already happening with the three at the top). the important thing is to stay in touch with 4th-5th.
