I just hope that the club is really strong in dealings with Liverpool. Tell them the amount we want and tell them the date we want it by, and if they miss either of those requirements, then that's the end of it.

At the minute, we're not in contract talks with him, so we're just sitting around wondering while the player skips pre-season. That's totally unacceptable, so a line needs drawing under this one way or the other. And it needs to happen quickly. 

 

I honestly don't know why we haven't done something like this. We look weak as fuck just waiting for the big lads to make their mind up and come and take our player whenever they feel like it, and hoping they'll maybe go away and let us keep him if we're nice and quiet. Zero reaction from anyone above Howe. That's what's pissing me off more than what Isak is doing.

He signed the contract, not Darwin Nunez. He's handsomely paid and the club are planning to improve on that (based on Murphy constantly setting him up and others winning penalties for him ;)). If he stayed in Spain who knows how he will have developed and what exposure he would have received. It's hard to fathom any other situation where he will have improved his goal scoring more markedly. The year prior to us buying him he scored 6 league goals and contributed 2 assists. The year before that was his first year breaking double figures. Coming here he would have massively increased his salary from what Sociedad were paying.

It probably won't be £150m but it shouldn't just be the £120m they were parading about with a week or so ago. We should be quoting a number that makes them uncomfortable and then refusing to budge on it, just like everyone else is doing with us.

If the offer is £100m it's a very easy no. If they want him they need to pay what he's worth plus additional to allow for the fact he still has 3 years on his contract. As noted by others he can't afford to have a strop.

This is from yesterday, I think, and I don't know much about this Ben Jacobs lad. 

 

Liverpool have played us like a fiddle here though, if it's right. Unsettle the player, hope he does what he's done, then come back a week later and go "... So NOW is he for sale, lads?"

 

No doubt his agent has been a willing part of the choreography, and whether Isak has been duped into it or his playing his role willingly, who knows. 

 

Anyway, if the above is to be believed, IF a bid comes in, it'll be because we've given them the green light. 

 

I sort of want us to get shot so we can move on, but at the same time I'd take some satisfaction from us releasing a public statement to say that despite Liverpool's work to unsettle the player, our original position stands, and they can fuck off til summer 2026.

I read that and it's worded in a very careful way. It's the biggest indication yet that it all might fall through. No bid from the scousers yet. This Jacobs is another one getting his content direct from the Anfield media relations team, doing negotiations in public it would seem but going behind NUFCs back to speak to the player in person while he's still got 3 years left on his contract 😑

If that does transpire is there any point in the club improving his wages in the meantime? Or do we say sorry Alex noone offered what we need to replace you and end the conversation there? Ideally there is some reciprocation, Isak owning up to his part in the shenanigans and the club wanting to get the most out of him for this upcoming season by keeping things positive. Perhaps an improved contract that includes a buyout clause for an agreed amount, say £130m from next summer. Then he needs to play well in a World Cup year and also to ensure that someone values him at £130m.

I don't think we can reward him with a new contract following this episode. Even if it's partly just to insert a release clause. It sends a terrible message to the rest of the squad to make the lad that just skipped pre season the highest paid player at the club for a year.

I'm struggling to work out why you would consider even giving them that much encouragement?

he's our player and he's contracted to be so for another 3 years.

I don't think it'd be wildly inaccurate to assume they've been in his ear for months now, very probably since wembley and maybe that's the reason his form dropped off a cliff at the back end of last season.

do you think if their great friends man utd had very obviously and publicly been trying to unsettle salah for weeks they'd be exchanging pleasantries with them?

Has he actually said definitively he wanted to leave ? It was reported he wanted to explore his options and even that had no quotes. The stuff in the Saudi press from his agent said all options including continuing at Newcastle.

I followed this post up with another one saying I'd be delighted if we put a statement out putting them in their place and telling them to do one, but I don't realistically think that's going to happen. 

 

The middle ground is that we play hardball with them, IF we've accepted that the player is going. 

 

I'm not exactly advocating pleasantries, I'm on about setting them a hard figure and a hard deadline. 

 

More than anything else, I want us to be able to move on one way or another with the season.

Yes it’s definitely worded to give the (almost certainly false) impression that Liverpool have been behaving in an honourable way and have played no part in unsettling the player.

Later on that day wor lass advised me that the same person once said, a decade or so ago, "I can see that arse" about her, whilst she was working in a pub.  Feel free to connect these moments in time accordingly,  but my interpretation is Isak is going to Arsenal.
